Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be accepted.
  • At least two years of experience as a Clinical Tech I, or certification as a Phlebotomist followed by achievement of the required competency level for specified job responsibilities, is required.
  • For assignment to Phlebotomy Services, certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board or agency may be required.
  • Pediatric phlebotomy experience is required.
  • Basic phlebotomy and specimen processing techniques are required.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Effective professional communication skills are required to interact with patients and customers.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures involved in the procurement, processing, and evaluation of patient specimens.
  • Prepare and initiate special tests and procedures, including cytogenetics, general laboratory testing, point-of-care testing, urinalysis without a microscope, phlebotomy, and specimen management.
  • Obtain the total volume, aliquot, and distribute urine specimens; determine urine volume and properly label aliquot containers.
  • Communicate with patients, family members, and medical personnel to identify problems, initiate resolution, and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay patient fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Maintain positive patient identification, maintain clinical laboratory records, register and accession patients and specimens, and perform order entry as required.
  • Perform quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Receive and process specimens according to laboratory area procedures and protocols.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory using Beaker.
  • Positively identify patient specimens, verify laboratory labels and requisitions, ensure valid orders, and properly sort specimens.
  • Distribute specimens, supplies, and reports to appropriate laboratory staff and perform messenger or courier activities as required.
  • Maintain supply inventory, stock supplies on carts and hand trays, and wash glassware.
  • Use hospital information systems and software.
  • Assist with maintaining specimens and slides.
  • Perform routine maintenance required by laboratory procedures.
  • Assist with word processing, miscellaneous office tasks, and maintaining office records.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the described work.
Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended for phlebotomy assignment.
  • Certification of Basic Life Support is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terms is preferred.
