Requirements
- Current approved Alabama Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license or a multi-state license, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training, or the ability to obtain it within the stated timeframe.
- A minimum associate degree in nursing is required.
- Ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
- Ability to obtain required specialty certifications applicable to the Emergency Department, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support; Trauma Nursing Core Course is required for the regional campus.
- Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, make decisions affecting others, delegate to and receive delegation from team members, address conflict and stressful situations, and work with different personalities.
- Ability to use electronic mail, telephone, texting, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.
- Ability to work varying schedules, including every other weekend.
- Ability to perform the physical duties of the role, including prolonged standing and walking, running in an emergency, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, kneeling, bending, sitting, stooping, and working prolonged shifts.
- Ability to work safely with potential exposure to body fluids, disease, infection, chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions while using required protective equipment.
- Physical presence on site is essential.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate nursing care while maintaining professional nursing practice standards and therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Provide leadership to team members by articulating and delegating expected standards of care, supervising and encouraging team members, and supporting their contributions.
- Supervise LPNs, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, orthopedic technicians, and other non-licensed staff.
- Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
- Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
- Evaluate and reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
- Apply safety principles during care and accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
- Participate in transition rounds, care planning, problem identification, and team shift reports.
- Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
- Perform initial and annual competency assessments for the applicable job class.
- Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards established in performance evaluations.
- Perform compliance requirements and adhere to health-system policies, procedures, and behavioral standards.
- Identify and reduce unsafe practices and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
