Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required for employees hired on or after June 1, 2017.
  • The employee must successfully complete the organization's competency requirements for English, writing, spelling, and reading comprehension.
  • The employee must successfully complete hospital, core, and unit-specific orientation programs.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology is required.

  • The employee must communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and all members of the care delivery team.
  • The employee must be able to stand or walk considerably, lift light-weight objects up to 20 pounds, assist with heavier patient-lifting tasks, and perform required fatiguing physical motions.
  • Safe patient handling, appropriate body mechanics, safe work practices, patient transfer or lifting devices, and personal protective equipment are required when functioning as a Patient Safety Assistant.
  • Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Responsibilities
  • The Unit Clerk/Receptionist performs clerical and receptionist functions for the unit under the supervision of Unit Leadership.
  • The employee prepares and compiles records on the nursing unit and coordinates unit communication systems, including phones, the nurse call system, and hospital information systems.
  • The employee relays information, maintains public relations, and assists with supplies, equipment, and the overall unit environment.
  • The employee coordinates the flow of information throughout the unit or department for all staff.
  • The employee answers telephone and nurse call systems and provides information or relays messages to patients, visitors, and medical staff.
  • The employee directs visitors to patient rooms or visitor waiting areas and distributes mail, newspapers, and flowers to patients.
  • The employee compiles patient census, maintains patient records, and distributes information according to unit or department procedures.
  • The employee coordinates with the charge nurse to ensure smooth, efficient, and timely patient flow into, through, and out of the department.
  • The employee performs clerical duties and processes equipment and staff requests for department needs.
  • The employee records patient names, addresses, and attending physicians' names to prepare medical records for new patients.
  • The employee maintains the unit's patient medical-record files.
  • The employee monitors and requisitions designated supplies and organizes and stores them according to unit or department procedures.
  • The employee gathers, inputs, and retrieves information in various computerized systems.
  • The employee transports patients and guests within the facility as directed or needed.
  • The employee stocks supplies to facilitate patient care in the assigned unit.
  • The employee takes admission paperwork to patient rooms and facilitates and completes Medicare, Important Message, and other paperwork as directed by the registered nurse.
  • The employee manages incoming tubes from the tube station and delivers medications or other items to the registered nurse or medication cart.
  • The employee works with Transport to monitor elevator bays for beds and carts.
  • The employee assists in monitoring the Environment of Care.
  • The employee attends to patient and family needs, including passing water and getting towels.
  • The employee maintains unsupervised access to unit medication rooms for stocking or retrieving supplies.
  • Under registered-nurse direction and supervision, the employee holds and cuddles stable newborn infants in applicable obstetric units.
  • When assigned as a Patient Safety Assistant, the employee observes and reports patient activities and behaviors, responds appropriately to interventions, communicates patient status to the responsible registered nurse, assists with patient turns and transfers, accompanies patients for occasional diagnostic tests, and maintains a clean and orderly environment.
Desired Qualifications
  • One to three months of related experience and/or training is preferred.
  • Previous healthcare experience is preferred.
