Requirements
  • Completion of some high school coursework, or an alternative combination of education and experience.
  • A few months of experience in processing or distribution of goods or customer service.
  • Cash handling experience.
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures, including bank deposits and summary reports.
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines.
  • Experience working in a computerized environment.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Good oral interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 29 pounds frequently without assistance, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing products.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully.
  • Willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army's mission and purpose.
  • Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to store sales targets and provide efficient, courteous customer service.
  • Provide information about product pricing and featured sale products while protecting donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures.
  • Complete customer transactions accurately, including cash and debit sales, with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
  • Follow store policies regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
  • Process donated materials by loading, unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing them.
  • Respond to customer stock enquiries by phone and in person.
  • Monitor activity within the store to support store security.
  • Assist with store layout, window displays, and merchandise displays.
  • Control inventory by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing items.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish sales-floor inventory, and remove inventory from the sales floor as directed.
  • Handle merchandise safely and in an organized manner, assist with stock rotation, bag textiles for recycling, and place metal recycling appropriately.
  • Assist donors with contributions, unload donations, and place stock in the appropriate location.
  • Sort and process goods properly, comply with quality standards, and price products according to store policy.
  • Contribute to the safety of staff and customers, including snow removal, clearing fire exits, and cleaning spills and obstacles.
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store appearance; tidy and restock shelves; clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary; and clean common areas on a rotational basis.
