Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical science, physical science, or biological science; if the degree is outside those science disciplines, at least two years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high-complexity testing may substitute.
  • Three years of previous hospital experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Recent three years of clinical Microbiology experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist if Microbiology bench competencies are required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification or a nationally recognized equivalent approved by Laboratory Administration before an employment offer.
  • Ability to meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments standards for high-complexity testing.
  • Participation in the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification Certification Maintenance Program for Medical Technologists initially certified after January 1, 2004; those certified before that date must remain active.
  • Flexibility and willingness to support laboratory staffing to meet patient-care needs.
  • Knowledge and skills from experience or training to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Ability to use effective communication skills.
  • Ability to keep current with computer functions, computer usage, and computer- and printer-related changes relevant to laboratory work.
  • If currently employed, being in good standing with no plan of action developed within the past 12 months.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and evaluate quality-control testing according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in training new staff in general laboratory practice and the primary area of expertise.
  • Participate in competency oversight of staff in the primary area of expertise.
  • Complete competency testing through College of American Pathologists proficiency surveys and quality-control performance, including annual peer observation of technique in all scheduled areas.
  • Keep current on policy and procedure changes for the work area, and provide input to and directly review and update procedures for final review by Medical and Laboratory Directors.
  • Maintain the work center, keep the area clean and stocked, and prepare or replace reagents as required, including receiving, logging, and stocking supplies.
  • Prioritize and evaluate results before verification, including critical limits, delta checks, method linearity, and result plausibility, and document follow-up when necessary.
  • Communicate with physicians or nurses about results requiring immediate or prompt attention and follow up with the pathologist.
  • When functioning as lead technologist, address staff problems or questions, contact laboratory management when needed, document issues for laboratory management, and resolve absenteeism-related scheduling issues.
  • Participate in peer review as both reviewer and reviewed employee.
  • Maintain competency in each testing area and participate in proficiency testing whenever possible.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation problems to restore instrument use as soon as possible.
  • Log specimens into the laboratory information system when necessary, evaluate specimen acceptability, and resolve problems involving unacceptable or improperly labeled specimens.
Desired Qualifications
  • Cross-training and maintained competency as a generalist with Microbiology and/or Blood Bank competencies to provide coverage.
  • Specialist experience in Microbiology and/or Blood Bank.
  • Lead Technologist responsibility for department operations in Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, or Chemistry sections of the core laboratory.
  • Bilingual skills.
