Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Biological Science, Chemical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or related occupation.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing instruments.
  • Experience with clinical laboratory testing.
  • Experience reporting laboratory results.
  • Experience performing quality control and calibrations to ensure accurate result reporting.
  • Experience reviewing quality control data.
  • Preceptor training.
  • Occupational certification as ASCP, AAB, or AMT certified.
Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy and clinical laboratory testing in hematology, urinalysis, general microscopy, transfusion medicine, serology, bacteriology, coagulation, chemistry, and blood gases to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations when collecting samples for testing.
  • Perform tests, procedures, and analyses as requested by the physician and in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Perform quality control for all procedures at required intervals; verify and document that quality control results are within acceptable limits; and apply and document corrective action and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Immediately communicate critical values or markedly unusual test results to the physician or registered nurse.
  • Maintain equipment and the work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and document required instrument repairs.
  • Use AIDET with each patient interaction.
  • Comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability regulations pertaining to protected health information.
