We are seeking a software engineer to work on a core component of the Couchbase Server database.  The component can process millions of operations per second in a distributed manner, and is written in highly-performant, modern C++.  The codebase of the component is open source, with the repository available on github.

The engineer will work within a small team of highly skilled engineers, including 3+ days a week in the Couchbase Manchester office.

The role involves working in the team and collaborating with other Couchbase teams by:

• Contributing code and participating in code reviews.
• Resolving issues raised by the Quality Engineering team.
• Investigating issues raised by the Customer Support team. 
• Participating in technical discussions and bringing ideas on improving the performance and capabilities of the component.

The role:

• Contribute code patches to the KV-Engine codebase.
• Review code patches produced by team colleagues.
• Resolve bugs raised by the Quality Engineering team.
• Investigate issues raised by the Customer Support team. 

Requirements:.

• 7+ years of software engineering experience in modern C++.
• Experienced with Linux and comfortable using development tools such as gdb and wireshark.
• Deep knowledge of computer architecture and skilled at evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of given designs.
• Strong understanding of the underlying principles of distributed systems.
• Enthusiastic and inquisitive, with a constant willingness to learn.
• The successful candidate must, by the commencement of employment, have the right to work in the UK.

Preferred:

• Experienced working on a large complex codebase.
• Familiarity with build systems like CMake and Continuous Integration workflows.
• Presence on github, gitlab or similar.
• Contributed to one or more open source projects.
