Ecobee designs smart home devices to improve home comfort, security, and energy efficiency. Its product line includes intelligent thermostats, cameras, and sensors that integrate with other smart home systems. The flagship SmartThermostat offers voice control via Siri and Alexa, letting users adjust settings with simple commands. Ecobee’s offerings work by connecting devices in a home network and, in some cases, cloud services for monitoring and security features; devices can operate independently or as part of a connected ecosystem. The company differentiates itself through a focus on energy savings, data privacy, user-friendly design, and a seamless experience across devices and platforms. Its goal is to help homeowners optimize living spaces, reduce energy bills, and increase home security by providing easy-to-use, interoperable smart home solutions.

The device is ENERGY STAR certified and can save homeowners up to 23% on heating and cooling costs annually, potentially reducing bills by $250 per year. The thermostat integrates with Rheem's EcoNet Technology and is compatible with non-communicating residential systems from Rheem, Ruud and Friedrich brands. Ecobee's Grid Resiliency service delivered 108 megawatts of capacity during Summer 2025, demonstrating potential to unlock 2.8 gigawatts across the US and Canada, according to an independent evaluation by Demand Side Analytics. The service, part of ecobee's eco+ thermostat platform, allows grid operators to reduce energy demand across enrolled homes during peak periods. An analysis of 11 events across CAISO, ERCOT and SPP territories found peak reductions exceeding one kilowatt per device, with average reductions of 0.65 kilowatts. Over 143,000 ecobee devices participated, achieving a 73% average homeowner participation rate. The report estimates Grid Resiliency could unlock approximately 2,585 megawatts in the US and 215 megawatts in Canada, providing utilities with a tool to manage peak demand without compromising comfort.
ecobee has expanded its SmartBuildings platform with a new API for multifamily property operators, announced at the AHR Expo in Las Vegas. The SmartBuildings API enables direct integration with Resident Experience Platforms and building management systems, allowing property managers to optimise HVAC performance, reduce energy consumption and lower operational costs. The API brings ecobee's analytics, automation and energy management tools into existing property management systems. For operators seeking centralised control, ecobee continues offering SmartBuildings Fleet Management, which provides building-wide visibility, remote temperature control and real-time alerts. Early pilot programmes with property management and REP providers showed faster setup, improved temperature control and better performance across multifamily buildings. Founded in 2007, ecobee has helped North American customers save over 41.2 TWh of energy since launching the world's first smart thermostat in 2009.
