Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of Physical Sciences sufficient to teach courses from basic through college level.
  • Evidence of teaching potential.
  • Understanding of process-based writing.
  • Familiarity with adult learning theory and current pedagogical strategies that enhance student critical thinking.
  • Knowledge of student-centered tutoring strategies.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft software and appropriate instructional and course management software.
  • Verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with small and large groups.
  • Proficiency in designing and grading tests and creating effective instructional materials.
  • Experience in tutoring.
  • Ability to multitask, collaborate with others, and work independently.
  • Ability to use technology to enhance instruction and apply effective classroom management.
Responsibilities
  • Create an optimum learning environment and support student success.
  • Teach college-level and pre-college-level Science Composition and science-related courses.
  • Develop syllabi, evaluation procedures, and assignment calendars in accordance with course outlines.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes during scheduled times using department-approved texts.
  • Follow department guidelines for course content and best practices.
  • Use appropriate classroom management techniques and technology.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, assessments, and activities appropriate to each class.
  • Assign grades and return graded work and evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and electronic grade books, and submit required reports and records by published deadlines.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the college.
  • Attend department and college workshops, training sessions, development activities, and meetings as required.
  • Participate in student learning assessment activities and perform assigned departmental duties.
  • Use the college course management system, Microsoft Office Suite, and other approved programs.
  • Submit requested syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other documents to the department course management site.
  • Check the Owens email account daily, respond to required messages within 48 hours, and respond to student inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Be available to meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Support the college, School of STEM, and departmental mission, vision, and core values.
  • Maintain professional and collegial behavior toward students, colleagues, supervisors, and the college community.
