Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or equivalent accreditation.
  • ABD candidates will be considered, provided the doctoral degree is conferred by January 2, 2026; if the selected candidate is ABD at the time of appointment, the position will be offered at the Lecturer level on a fixed-term contract until the degree is conferred.
  • Must possess a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to civil engineering, as well as selected lower-level interdisciplinary engineering courses. Plan and teach assigned courses and adequately perform other duties/responsibilities as articulated on the annual assignment.
  • Engage in regular grant writing and scholarly research, with a focus on securing external funding from federal, state, and local agencies to support and advance research initiatives.
  • Contributes service to the university, the department, and the broader professional community.
  • Must work closely with the Department Chair and other faculty on assessment and evaluation tasks necessary for ABET accreditation.
  • Hold office hours.
  • Attend departmental meetings.
  • Adopt course materials in a timely manner.
  • Adopt the university learning management system.
  • Adopt other campus-wide technology platforms as appropriate to other specified job duties.
  • Complete mandatory/required training in a timely manner.
  • Abide by University Policies and Regulations.
  • Participate in the evaluation process in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and related documents.
  • Participate in the assessment process as required by your respective department.
  • Timely and professional communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.
  • Engage in essential duties with the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, excellence, and within the accepted practices and norms of your respective field/profession.
  • Prepare syllabi and instructional materials, develop and deliver lectures, tests, and evaluate students.
  • Engage in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.
  • Ensure the timely completion and reporting of student learning assessments.
  • Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University.
  • Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission.
  • Attend faculty and college meetings as required.
  • Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program.
  • Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals.
  • Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
  • Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours.
  • Perform regular scholarly research and publication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • Teaching, research, and scholarly interests that align with the programs and mission of U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering.
  • Civil engineer with expertise in areas related to sustainability and resilience.
  • Relevant field experience in one or more of the above-listed areas is highly desirable.
  • A rank-appropriate record of educational and/or scientific publication in scholarly journals pertinent to the interest areas above is expected. Field experience related to civil engineering or other closely related fields may be considered in lieu of publication.
  • Successful candidates must be able to teach new and/or existing courses in civil and environmental engineering, as well as in selected general engineering topics.
