Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in a long-term care, hospital, or other related healthcare setting.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to be insured under professional liability and crime coverage policies specified by the insurance carrier's underwriting standards.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, push, or pull residents, patients, and equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, develop, and potentially direct the overall operation of the Activity Department, ensuring an ongoing activities program meets each resident's interests and physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being in accordance with company and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Provide quality activity programming to residents.
  • Interact with residents to ensure quality care and positive resident-staff relations.
  • Maintain open, trust-building relationships with residents' family members and respond professionally and promptly to requests or concerns.
  • Review resident concerns and complaints and maintain written records of actions taken.
  • Act as a community liaison by speaking about program services to various audiences.
  • Seek and secure new revenue-generating opportunities and referral sources.
  • Attend care conferences as necessary.
  • Address concerns from the Resident/Family Satisfaction Survey.
  • Maintain and review charts, notes, and documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Keep informed about licensure, certification, and reimbursement issues to anticipate and implement necessary changes in facility practices and maximize the facility's position on those issues.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of resident information and honor residents' personal and property rights.
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Committee in determining and assuring ongoing quality activity services and implementing plans of action to correct identified deficiencies.
  • Participate in and monitor clinical assessments of the Minimum Data Set.
  • Develop and oversee preliminary and comprehensive written plans of care for each resident and ensure activity progress notes and plans of care document the services provided and the resident's response.
  • Keep abreast of pertinent information through reading and attending workshops, seminars, and continuing education courses.
  • Supervise Activities staff.
  • Foster a positive work environment that attracts, retains, and motivates employees.
  • Interview, select, and orient new direct reports.
  • Define, establish, and promote performance expectations for direct reports.
  • Evaluate direct reports' job performance and provide developmental guidance for improved performance and growth.
  • Monitor employee accountability with organizational requirements, document noncompliance, and work with Human Resources when further documentation and intervention is necessary.
  • Participate in the development, planning, scheduling, conducting, and monitoring of in-service training, on-the-job training, and orientation programs for departmental staff.
  • Ensure a reasonable and sufficient staffing plan when a direct report is absent or a direct-report position is vacant.
  • Respond timely and thoughtfully to questions, requests, and work product from departmental staff for review and approval.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in recreation, art therapy, or a related field.
  • A current unencumbered designation to practice as a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
