Blizzard lawsuit against Project Ascension: wow private server case update 2026.

Blizzard lawsuit against Project Ascension: wow private server case update 2026. Blizzard's lawsuit against Project Ascension, a top WoW private server, is ongoing. Get the latest on the case, DMCA claims, court deadlines, and what's next. 8 July 2026 by Mediosick Quick facts: Blizzard Entertainment's copyright infringement lawsuit against Project Ascension, one of the largest World of Warcraft private servers, is still ongoing as of July 2026. Filed on June 12, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the case accuses Ascension's operators of copyright infringement, DMCA circumvention, false designation of origin, and civil RICO racketeering across nine legal counts. Blizzard is seeking a permanent injunction to shut the server down, full turnover of Ascension's game client and code, a complete accounting of revenue, and statutory damages that could reach up to $150,000 per infringed work. Computer & Video Games Despite the legal pressure, Project Ascension remains online and continues releasing content updates for its player base, which it claims exceeds one million users. The latest developments: The lawsuit escalated on June 29, 2026, when Blizzard's legal team issued formal summons requests to the named individuals behind Project Ascension, giving the defendants 21 days to file a response with the court. Court documents warn that failure to respond within that window could result in a default judgment in Blizzard's favor, which is the same outcome that has closed out several prior private-server cases. Some community reports suggest the developers may be seeking additional time to formally respond to Blizzard's claims, which could push the case timeline further into late 2026, though this has not been confirmed through official court filings at the time of writing. Meanwhile, the case (filed as Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. v. Powell) is publicly viewable on CourtListener, and it names six individual defendants (mostly U.S.-based, with one in Australia) along with several companies Blizzard describes as shell entities used to move revenue and avoid U.S. tax liability. Blizzard alleges Ascension generated millions of dollars through its Donation Points system, an in-game currency used to purchase cosmetics and experience boosts. Project Ascension is the latest target in Blizzard's ongoing crackdown on unauthorized WoW private servers, following its high-profile 2025-26 lawsuit against Turtle WoW, which ended in a permanent injunction and a private settlement before the server shut down for good in May 2026. A smaller server, Stormforge, also closed after receiving a cease-and-desist around the same time. Unlike blizzlike servers that faithfully recreate retail WoW, Ascension is known for its distinctive "classless" system, letting players freely combine abilities, talents, and resources across all WoW classes to build custom character builds. Blizzard's complaint also alleges Ascension's infrastructure is tied to the Russia-based hosting provider Aeza Group, sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for enabling cybercrime, which Blizzard argues signals "willful intent to engage in unlawful activity." Notably, Turtle WoW's developers had previously appealed to Blizzard in October 2025 to consider a formal licensing framework for fan-run servers, similar to arrangements like City of Heroes: Homecoming. Questions for you: * Do you side with Blizzard protecting their IP, or do you think private servers like Ascension should be left alone if they offer a unique experience? * Do you think Project Ascension will survive this legal battle, or is it only a matter of time before they are forced to shut down? * What do you think this lawsuit means for the wider World of Warcraft private server community? Will other custom servers start closing shop out of fear? Mediosick 8 July 2026
