Requirements
  • No formal education or prior experience is required; equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities may be demonstrated through education and/or work experience.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required.
  • The employee must complete additional training for phlebotomy and special training for electrocardiogram performance.
  • The employee must be trained and willing to function as a sitter for patients requiring full-time hospital supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Take and record patients' temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake-output measurements.
  • Encourage patients to turn, cough, take deep breaths, and use incentive spirometry according to the plan of care.
  • Ambulate patients and assist them in and out of bed, into wheelchairs, and during transport as necessary.
  • Attend to patients' nutritional needs by distributing meal trays, feeding patients, and filling and distributing water pitchers.
  • Provide morning or evening care, including bed baths, oral hygiene, hair care, back care, dressing, changing bed linen, cleaning bedside areas, straightening rooms, and other supportive care.
  • Empty drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins, and record intake and output.
  • Help maintain a safe environment by reporting malfunctioning equipment, handling linen appropriately, and storing supplies.
  • Provide general care, including positioning, lifting, and turning patients; assisting with bedpans, urinals, or commodes; providing preoperative supportive care; and applying or removing abdominal binders, anti-embolism stockings, and sequential compression devices.
  • Empty and clean ostomy bags according to procedure.
  • Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
  • Perform range-of-motion tasks and assist with ambulatory devices according to patients' plans of care.
  • Perform phlebotomy, including labeling specimens with two patient identifiers and maintaining, rotating, and restocking lab-draw supplies.
  • Perform electrocardiograms.
  • Promptly answer patient call lights and respond to patient requests.
  • Report significant changes in patients' conditions to registered nurses.
  • Maintain clean and orderly patient-care and work environments.
  • Apply infection-control policies, including standard precautions, transmission-based isolation precautions, Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, safety measures, and proper body mechanics.
  • Document and maintain patient records as appropriate.
  • Gather equipment for oxygen setup and check oxygen connections and placement.
  • Check the proper functioning of equipment at patients' bedsides.
  • Ambulate patients using oxygen.
  • Set up suction equipment and check its proper function.
  • Provide age-specific care for the population served.
  • Perform skills listed on the Nursing Assistant checklist.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete required annual education assignments; work toward goals and objectives; and participate in quality-improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Each of Covenant Health's nine acute-care hospitals in East Tennessee has earned an 'A' hospital safety grade for Fall 2024 from The Leapfrog Group, marking the second consecutive semester all facilities achieved this top rating. The Leapfrog Group collects and reports data related to safety, quality, and other aspects of hospitals' performance. Twice a year, Leapfrog assigns safety grades based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
