GE HealthCare to buy medical imaging software provider Intelerad

GE HealthCare to buy medical imaging software provider Intelerad. Completion of the transaction is expected in H1 2026. GE HealthCare has announced an agreement to acquire medical imaging software provider Intelerad for a cash consideration of $2.3bn (C$3.24bn). This move is intended to support GE HealthCare's objective to significantly increase its range of cloud-enabled products by 2028. Founded in 1999 in Canada, Intelerad offers products intended for cardiology and radiology. Its cloud-first solutions are used in both outpatient and inpatient healthcare environments. Intelerad's presence in outpatient care is seen as complementary to GE HealthCare's established hospital-based imaging. The combined product offerings are expected to increase customer access and provide integrated imaging solutions across various healthcare environments. Intelerad's business model is expected to expedite GE HealthCare's transition towards a software-as-a-service (SaaS) approach and to raise recurring revenue. The global market for outpatient enterprise imaging represents a growth opportunity exceeding $2bn for GE HealthCare. GE HealthCare projects that Intelerad will generate nearly $270m in revenue during the first full year following the acquisition, with around 90% of this being recurring. The adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation margin is expected to exceed 30%. Intelerad's revenue is said to be increasing at a low double-digit annual rate and is anticipated to speed up within the combined company. Completion of the transaction is expected in the first half of 2026 (H1 2026), pending regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. GE HealthCare plans to finance the acquisition with a combination of cash on hand and debt proceeds. GE HealthCare CEO and president Peter Arduini said: "Our acquisition of Intelerad will bring additional cloud-enabled and intelligent solutions in radiology and cardiology into our portfolio of products and extend our capabilities into outpatient networks, enabling care teams to be more efficient, improve outcomes and deliver precision care for patients globally." GE HealthCare to Acquire Intelerad for $2.3B

GE HealthCare to acquire Intelerad for $2.3B. This is the second deal to cross the billion-dollar mark in medtech in a week. 'Tis the season for deals to make it across the billion-dollar mark. Earlier, Abbott Laboratories proposed the acquisition of Exact Sciences for $21 billion. Now, GE HealthCare has entered into an agreement to acquire Intelerad, a medical imaging software provider, for $2.3 billion. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2026. This acquisition demonstrates GE HealthCare's continued commitment to cloud-enabled and AI-powered solutions across care settings and furthers the company's aim to triple its offerings of cloud-enabled products by 2028. Intelerad is a leading medical imaging software and digital enterprise workflow solutions company with a significant presence in outpatient ambulatory care settings. Its cloud-first products are designed for radiology and cardiology and extend across both inpatient and outpatient care settings. Intelerad's leading outpatient footprint complements GE HealthCare's leadership in hospital-based imaging. Together, these combined capabilities will create a more comprehensive, cloud-first, and AI-enabled imaging offering spanning diverse care settings - from large academic medical centers to rapidly expanding ambulatory networks. "As hospital and ambulatory care providers face increased demand for imaging and rising patient volumes, they are looking to simplify and unify their workflows," said Peter Arduini, President and CEO of GE HealthCare. "Our acquisition of Intelerad will bring additional cloud-enabled and intelligent solutions in radiology and cardiology into our portfolio of products and extend our capabilities into outpatient networks, enabling care teams to be more efficient, improve outcomes, and deliver precision care for patients globally. As a result, we expect to accelerate our growth in SaaS products and recurring revenues as we take another evolutionary step to grow into a healthcare solutions provider." BTIG Analyst Ryan Zimmerman wrote that the acquisition was favorable for GE HealthCare. "We think the transaction makes strategic sense for GE HealthCare as it bolsters [the company's] recurring revenue offerings," Zimmerman wrote. "Intelerad products can be bundled into larger enterprise-wide transactions for both equipment and software. As GEHC pushes to increase use of internally developed AI algorithms within Imaging, we think it will pair well with Intelerad's suite of products over time, likely accelerating adoption." Can the Emerging InteleHeart Platform Facilitate Improved Efficiency with Cardiology and Radiology?

Can the emerging InteleHeart platform facilitate improved efficiency with cardiology and radiology? Through enhanced data interoperability and access to patient histories, the cloud-based InteleHeart may facilitate better communication and workflow efficiencies for radiologists and cardiologists. In order to reduce dependence on siloed systems, juggling of multiple platforms and repetitive manual entry, Intelerad has launched the cardiovascular platform InteleHeart, which enables access to current and previous imaging, relevant clinical history and reporting all in one place. By providing a thorough overview of a patient's cardiovascular health history, Intelerad noted the InteleHeart platform enhances efficiency with reduced reporting time and improved decision-making for personalized treatment. In a recent interview with Diagnostic Imaging, Morris Panner said InteleHeart combines cloud-based capabilities with enterprise imaging scalability and bolstered data interoperability that extends beyond the walls of a given health-care institution. "It's a cloud-based platform for very reliable and dependable workflows. You're now able to integrate data more easily. If you put data in there once, it's (available) across all settings of care and you're able to use it remotely," explained Panner, the president of Intelerad Medical Systems. For radiologists, Panner pointed out that InteleHeart is integrated with the Intelerad's radiology image sharing platform InteleShare as well as the company's InteleOrchestrator system, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate efficient triage and resource allocation. While data interoperability has been a longstanding challenge in radiology and the broader health care environment, Panner maintained that InteleHeart has the potential to foster easier data integration and improved access to cardiovascular history with a resulting enhanced focus on personalized patient care. "In radiology, we're super focused on the image. In cardiology, I would say you're super focused on data, and the image is part of that," noted Panner. "But what you're really trying to figure out is: 'How is (the patient) looking over time, and what interventions do I want to take, and what has been the result of those interventions?'" For more insights from Morris Panner, watch the video below.
