Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in a recognized engineering discipline is required, with preference given to chemical, mechanical, or fire protection engineering.
  • At least 10 years of experience as an engineer with an oil, petrochemical, midstream, or chemical company, or at least 10 years performing property loss control field inspections for an insurance, consulting, or brokerage company involving similar risks.
  • Technical knowledge of 29 CFR 1910.119 Process Safety Management is required, including Mechanical Integrity, inspections of rotating and fixed equipment, breakdown and preventive maintenance, Key Performance Indicators, Process Hazard Analysis, Layer of Protection Analysis, Safety Instrumented Function, Safety Instrumented Level, Safety Instrumented System, Process Safety Startup Review, and Management of Change.
  • The ability to work independently, collaborate with underwriters and managers, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
  • Good communication, writing, organization, customer relations, public speaking, and time management skills are required.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operations and software programs such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel is required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct property loss control inspections of high-hazard industries, including oil and petrochemical, chemical, power generation, pulp and paper, steel and molten metal, electronics, and process industries.
  • Evaluate sprinkler systems and building additions, review fire alarm plans, and provide guidance to clients.
  • Perform engineering account reviews for underwriters and participate in account and broker meetings and presentations.
  • Maintain an individual schedule and write survey reports.
  • Provide guidance to underwriting staff regarding risk quality and insurability.
  • Maintain up-to-date inspection record database information.
  • Conduct on-site surveys and risk evaluations of existing and prospective Starr technical clients, client meetings, account management, presentations, and general consulting.
  • Travel primarily regionally, with 25–40% overnight travel expected.
Desired Qualifications
  • Understanding of sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, process hazards, and property loss control issues.
  • Technical knowledge of loss prevention codes and standards, including National Fire Protection Association, Factory Mutual, American Petroleum Institute, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers standards and industry practices.
