1) What the company does: SRI International is an independent nonprofit research institute that collaborates across science and engineering fields to create technologies and products aimed at improving safety, health, and sustainability. 2) How its products work: It conducts research and development to invent, prototype, test, and validate technologies, then licenses or partners with others to bring them to market. 3) How it is different: It operates as an independent nonprofit with a long history (80 years) of cross-disciplinary research that moves ideas from lab to real-world applications through partnerships, rather than focusing on selling products directly as a for-profit sole owner. 4) The goal: To advance safer, healthier, and more sustainable futures by discovering and developing impactful technologies and helping bring innovations to everyday use.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • DARPA awarded SRI $1.9 million in January 2026 for ongoing Menlo Park research.
  • NIST tapped SRI in 2026 for the Quantum Manufacturing Engineering Center.
  • SRI's 2026 press room highlights AI, quantum, and self-cooling paint momentum.

What critics are saying

  • Defense contracts dominate; any DARPA or DLA budget shift hits revenue fast.
  • Workforce fell from 3,443 in 2023 to 3,179 in March 2026, signaling pressure.
  • If commercialization ventures fail, SRI remains a grant-and-contract shop with weak pricing power.

What makes SRI International unique

  • PARC joined SRI in 2023, adding Xerox-era computer science depth and talent.
  • SRI now spans government, commercial, and venture-building work across multiple campuses.
  • Tokyu Land partnership extends SRI's Silicon Valley commercialization model into Japan's startup ecosystem.

Valence AI raises $5M, secures US patents on real-time emotion detection from live speech

Valence AI, an emotional intelligence infrastructure company, has raised $5 million in seed funding led by Differential Ventures, with participation from Difference Partners, Willowtree Ventures, Change Paradox Ventures and SRI International. The company has also secured two US patents on identifying emotional state from live speech in real-time conversation using deep learning. Founded by Chloe Duckworth and Shannon Brownlee, Valence AI's Pulse Emotion model analyses live calls and classifies emotional state from speech in real time. The company reports 92% accuracy on internal benchmarks and claims handle time reductions of 30% in production deployments. The funding will support expansion of Pulse's language coverage, deeper integrations across voice AI platforms and new hires. Valence AI's customers include Harte Hanks, CustomerHD and Fortune 500 retailers across healthcare and clinical research environments.

Nickel-Mining Plants To Juice Ev Battery Supply Chain

Sign up for daily news updates from CleanTechnica on email. Or follow us on Google NewsThe EV battery supply chain is fraught with pitfalls, one of them being the environmental cost of nickel mining. Nevertheless, solutions are emerging, and one of them has just emerged from stealth mode in the form of a new US phytomining startup called Metalplant. Wait, what is phytomining?US DOE Pursues Phytomining For Sustainable EV Battery Supply ChainPhytomining refers to the practice of harvesting plants for their metal content. It is not a particularly new idea, but its application to the EV battery supply chain is a new twist. The US Department of Energy, for one, has spotted an opportunity. Last month the agency’s high-risk, high-reward ARPA-E funding office announced a new $10 million funding pot aimed at developing a homegrown, plant-based EV battery supply chain here in the US, beginning with nickel.Other metals may be targeted eventually, but if phytomining ever becomes a standard feature in the EV battery supply chain, nickel is the low-hanging fruit.“Among the critical materials named in the DOE Critical Materials Assessment (CMA), nickel serves as an ideal target to validate the viability of phytomining in the U.S
