Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Progressively responsible experience in academic or nonprofit fundraising, typically seven or more years.
  • Demonstrated success identifying, qualifying, soliciting, cultivating, and stewarding donors at the lead annual and major gift level, including gifts of $50,000 or more.
  • Fluency in using persuasive language to promote visionary gift opportunities, with the proven ability to identify, qualify, and cultivate prospective major gift donors and the desire to exceed goals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal effectively and discreetly with donors, colleagues, and other appropriate officials.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to work effectively in a metrics-driven environment while building a culture of engagement and philanthropy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and a diverse constituent base.
  • Strong organizational skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, independence, and the ability and desire to work effectively with minimal supervision while managing complex priorities and concurrent projects.
  • Ability to work additional hours beyond typical work hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout the assigned region.
Responsibilities
  • Develop fundraising strategies and tactics and provide leadership to a team of fundraisers.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of 100–125 prospects and participate in one-on-one virtual and in-person cultivations and solicitations of gift opportunities.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of Batten School and VIMS priorities to make persuasive verbal and written arguments for supporting key programs and projects, matching prospects’ interests to specific needs.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and move prospects toward gifts benefiting William & Mary schools and programs, targeting philanthropic commitments of $50,000 and above.
  • Work with executive, development, regional, central, and university colleagues to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and close gifts while stewarding donors and prospects with major gift capacity.
  • Coordinate prospect research to identify new major donor individual and institutional prospects from the database and other sources.
  • Review alumni, parent, and friend listings from the database and publicly available sources and develop individual strategies to engage and cultivate them for new gifts.
  • Prepare letters of inquiry and proposals requesting support for endowment, education, research, and capital priorities.
  • Develop working knowledge of university goals, priorities, and programs and align fundraising efforts with those priorities.
  • Research and write briefings to prepare leadership and faculty for effective meetings with major gift prospects.
  • Direct follow-up correspondence and objectives resulting from donor meetings and document advancement activity in the donor and prospect database.
  • Suggest potential prospects for trustee and advisory boards.
  • Provide counsel and support to the Executive Director and Dean in engaging and cultivating current and prospective donors.
  • Collaborate with University Advancement colleagues to develop and elevate giving opportunities across multiple audiences and channels.
  • Share campaign priorities and strategies for Batten School and VIMS.
  • Work with volunteers and board members under the direction of the Executive Director and Dean.
  • Establish clear, well-communicated staff expectations related to unit goals and objectives.
  • Provide staff with frequent, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate.
  • Ensure staff have the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to accomplish goals.
  • Complete evaluations and employee work plans by established deadlines with proper documentation.
  • Address and document performance issues as they occur.
  • Review and communicate safety issues to support a safe and healthy workplace and reduce work-related absences.
