Requirements
  • An associate's degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • One of the following credentials is required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association; Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders; Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders; Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) from the American Health Information Management Association; or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) from the American Health Information Management Association.
  • The role requires frequent keyboard use and data entry.
  • The role requires the physical ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing 0–25 pounds; occasionally handle objects weighing 25–50 pounds; and rarely climb.
  • The role requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching, repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements, and use of near and far vision, depth perception, hearing, and speech.
  • The role occasionally requires bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping.
Responsibilities
  • Assign accurate diagnostic and procedure codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for inpatient hospital accounts.
  • Coordinate with the clinical documentation and quality teams to ensure that Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group, patient safety indicators, and hospital-acquired conditions are supported by physician documentation for appropriate coding.
  • Monitor assigned work queues to ensure that all records are charged in a timely manner.
  • Generate coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed.
  • Stay current with changes in coding conventions and coding updates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
