Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development credential is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must obtain all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • Must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients, assist with ambulation, stand for prolonged periods, bend over, and lift or lower solutions weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Must take the Ishihara color blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • Must follow organization policies, procedures, systems, ethical business practices, and infection control policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist with patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weights and perform vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, monitor patient response to dialysis, and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling.
  • Ensure appropriate machine safety alarms are enabled and conduct machine safety checks.
  • Document vital signs, treatment parameters, treatment information, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and arrange courier collection of specimens.
  • Clean blood spills with appropriate disinfectant and clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment and assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Conduct pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding testing, and initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application and review treatment sheets for completeness and corrections.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement.
  • Collect information for infection control audits and reinforce infection control practices and education for patients and families under authorized supervision.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about care, treatment options, home dialysis products, and home dialysis benefits.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the Transitional Care Unit and demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Assist with coordinating transitions to patients’ chosen dialysis modalities.
  • Report to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings when required and travel between assigned facilities and community locations when required.

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility is preferred.
