Opportunity Overview:
In this role, a highly qualified leader will direct and execute ML/AI roadmaps for two squads of machine learning engineers and applied scientists; be responsible for designing and implementing standard processes for full lifecycle of ML/AI solutions, from planning to deployment; designing and implementing robust evaluation systems to ensure fairness, accuracy, and clinical relevance; and driving a strong ML/AI governance strategy.
The successful candidate will possess both technical and user-facing skills that will allow you to be the technical “face” of ML/AI within our technical ecosystem/environment as well as directly to end users. The candidate will be able to drive discussions with senior technical and management personnel within users and partners, as well as the technical background that enables them to interact with and give guidance to data/research/applied scientists and software developers.
The ideal candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical issues. Finally, and of critical importance, the candidate will be an excellent technical team manager, someone who knows how to hire, develop, and retain high quality technical talent.
What you will do:
- Lead two squads of machine learning engineers and applied scientists across the ML/AI development life cycle: establishing problem-solution fit, finding signal in sparse or incomplete clinical and claims data, experimenting with novel and established methods, and building reliable, scalable production-ready ML systems.
- Design, deliver and maintain reliable MLOps and DataOps processes and infrastructure for AI/ML and data science and SaaS services, by collaborating with data scientists and data / ML engineers and external teams. Oversight of activities including but not limited to;
- automation for CI/CD and Saas Delivery on AWS;
- configure and maintain systems including Kubernetes and ElasticSearch/HUDI;
- Setup dashboard, observability, and alerts
- Design, deliver and maintain a robust ML/AI and data science evaluation engine, by which models can be tested against ‘ground truth’ datasets and monitored for fairness and accuracy. Includes designing human annotation systems and hand-labeling processes and training models against established benchmarks or ‘leaderboards’ to ensure best-in-class performance.
- Design, deliver, and administer a robust ethics and fairness evaluation system and governance process across the ML/AI and data science ecosystems. Best practices should include quantitative measurement systems to survey the entire population and automatically flag any irregularities around subpopulations of interest, high-risk cohorts, or protected classes. Develop processes to quickly and effectively manage any ML/AI ethics irregularities.
Your competencies:
- Delivered large scale AI/ML based solutions that are customer and/or user facing
- Experience in influencing product strategy through cutting edge research
- Experience in applying machine learning to real-world problems, with demonstrated impact on product or service outcomes
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication with an ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
- Hands on experience of leading teams in launching products that are healthcare specific or related to US healthcare payers or large provider systems
- Passionate about making a lasting positive difference and improving how things are done in healthcare.
Your qualifications:
- PhD degree in computer science, statistics, engineering, mathematics or another relevant discipline
- 10+ years of experience using AI/ML solutions to address large scale recommendation and optimization services
- 5+ years of experience leading science teams

The salary range for this position is $215,000 to $230,000 annually; as part of a total benefits package which includes health insurance, 401k and bonus. In accordance with state applicable laws, Cohere is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. Individual pay decisions are ultimately based on a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and internal alignment.
