Level Lock's future uncertain as Assa Abloy lays off most staff, folds brand into Kwikset

Level, the smart lock specialist, faces an uncertain future after parent company Assa Abloy reportedly laid off most of its staff and folded the business into its Kwikset brand. The restructuring resulted in the departure of Level's founders, CEO John Martin and CTO Ken Goto, along with most of the engineering team. Level was acquired by Sweden-based Assa Abloy in 2024. According to reports, Level's assets are being transferred to Kwikset, with only a small team remaining to complete an upcoming multi-family lock management product. Assa Abloy maintains that Level continues to operate and will keep developing the Level Lock platform and hardware. However, questions remain about support for hundreds of thousands of active users and the cloud platform that powers premium features like auto-unlock and door status detection.
