- Complete a Level II fieldwork placement or outpatient rotation in hand therapy, or have equivalent experience during clinical education.
- If transitioning from another practice area, demonstrate commitment to hand therapy through continuing education coursework or certifications in upper extremity rehabilitation.
- Work toward becoming a Certified Hand Therapist with support from the team.
- Have a Master's or Doctorate of Occupational Therapy degree.
- Hold a license to practice Occupational Therapy in the State of New York.
- Meet the physical demands of manual dexterity, general strength and endurance, lifting 5–35 pounds, carrying 5–10 pounds for 40–50 feet, pushing 5–150 pounds on casters, runners, or pulleys, sustaining a grip of 40–50 pounds for 1–2 minutes, and guarding a 120–140-pound lift load.
- Set clear expectations for patients' clinical progress while providing evidence-based, patient-centered care for conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder.
- Develop and progress individualized treatment plans using manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, custom orthotic fabrication, and patient education.
- Empower patients with home programs and strategies that support their functional goals and recovery.
- Collaborate with referring physicians, surgeons, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure exceptional outcomes.
- Experience or a solid foundation in hand therapy developed during clinical education.
