Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program or Med Ed Program, or one year of clinical experience.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Pass a state criminal background check and, where applicable, a federal background check for regulated areas.
  • Ability to lift or move materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • Ability to position or lift patients and stand or walk for 4 to 12 hours per day.
  • Ability to work in an outpatient clinical environment with frequent exposure to biohazards and communicable disease.
  • Ability to respond quickly to varying demands from providers and patients.
Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical and clerical support to medical staff and help ensure patients’ needs are met in the outpatient unit.
  • Assist providers with requisitions and forms for patient examinations or testing, and assist patients and providers during medical office visits.
  • Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of the attending provider.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
  • Obtain and document patient specimens as ordered.
  • Document and report test results to the medical provider.
  • Perform assigned or ordered point-of-care testing after training and skills testing, and maintain quality-control testing and logs.
  • Schedule ancillary, diagnostic, and therapeutic testing as needed.
  • Act as a chaperone during medical examinations.
  • Ensure medical records and test results, including records from referring physicians, are available for visits; review records for order and completeness.
  • Monitor the nurse call system and relay telephone information to appropriate staff.
  • Provide information and assistance to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Generate required patient charge data according to outpatient procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, prepare orders, report supply needs to the supervisor, and use and care for printers, embossers, computers, and other assigned equipment.
  • Schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using the computerized system, and schedule and coordinate diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
  • Register patients, collect identification and billing information, enter data into the computer, obtain charts and fee sheets, and obtain release-of-information and treatment-consent signatures.
  • Assist the Registration Specialist with money deposits and late-night coverage.
  • Assist the Manager or Supervisor with unit correspondence using computer software.
  • Process and mail letters to patients.
Desired Qualifications
  • Registration or certification as a medical assistant.
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care.
