Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or education equivalency for licensing.
  • One year of medical-surgical experience is required.
  • Advanced Life Support is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • A Registered Nurse license issued by the applicable state authority or a compact state is required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and pull 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform prolonged standing and walking and lift, position, push, or transfer patients.
  • Must be able to perform considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments for new admissions, transfers, and ongoing patient care.
  • Establish and coordinate patient care plans based on assessment data, diagnoses, and physician orders.
  • Provide and document nursing interventions based on patient needs, care plans, and changes in condition.
  • Coordinate, communicate, and document patient care with other disciplines.
  • Provide and document patient education and discharge planning.
  • Review and initiate physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and take appropriate nursing action.
  • Administer and document medication and parenteral therapy according to policy.
  • Perform blood-drawing techniques to obtain laboratory specimens, including blood cultures.
  • Notify anesthesia and surgical physicians of significant changes in patient condition.
  • Assist physicians with procedures, examinations, and other patient-care processes.
  • Document the effectiveness of nursing care and modify care plans as patients progress.
  • Evaluate patient education and understanding.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of pain medication and take appropriate nursing action.
  • Participate in committee membership, staff meetings, mandatory in-services, and other educational programs.
  • Evaluate own and peer performance by identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Function as a resource for coworkers, patients and families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel.
  • Identify problems, gather pertinent data, suggest solutions, communicate through appropriate lines of authority, and work toward resolution.
  • Direct care delivered by Care Partners.
  • Practice according to safety and infection-control policies, including universal precautions and hazardous-waste disposal.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, comfortable, and therapeutic environment.
  • Report risk-management concerns and complete annual mandatory requirements.
  • Provide age-appropriate care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Provide specialized care to patients at high risk for injury, including restraint care, pain management, and abuse assessment.
  • Provide timely, high-quality, courteous, and respectful patient care.
  • Communicate effectively, maintain confidentiality, explain procedures and education, and address patient and family concerns.
  • Provide accurate reports and collaborate with other departments to support workflow and continuity of care.
  • Use resources wisely, recommend efficiency improvements, minimize waste and overtime, and use time effectively.
  • Assist in developing unit-based performance-improvement plans, collect performance-improvement data, discuss outcomes, and implement action plans.
  • Participate in nursing-unit research activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Desired Qualifications
  • Critical Care or Post Anesthesia Care experience is preferred.
