Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certification in Basic Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- The ability to perform heavy or hard work involving strength or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking is required.
- The role requires working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, the deceased, hands in water, electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment, and a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
- The ability to effectively communicate with staff and patients is required.
- The ability to adapt to changing environments is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform nonprofessional direct and indirect patient-care activities under the supervision of a registered professional nurse and/or licensed medical provider.
- Assist medical and nursing staff with a variety of procedures in an emergency setting.
- Observe and immediately report all patient concerns and changes in condition to a registered nurse.
- Assist the registered nurse with admission, transfer, discharge, and general patient-care duties.
- Record vital signs and assist with personal hygiene and other patient-comfort measures.
- Record oral intake and outputs, including temperature, blood pressure, and other monitoring.
- Assist with specimen collection and other activities for assigned patients.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment to help prevent or control infections and provide safety for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Report necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
- Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
- Communicate with the registered nurse regarding nutrition issues, including poor appetite or lack of understanding of diet changes.
- Assist the department with administrative tasks that support department operations.
- Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
- Perform assigned tests such as glucose monitoring, urine testing, and stool testing, and maintain quality-control testing and logs according to department policy.
- Perform routine discontinuation of intravenous catheters as assigned.
- Assist in caring for drainage devices such as Penrose drains, chest tubes, and similar catheters while maintaining accurate output.
- Perform electrocardiogram testing upon request.
- Transport specimens to the laboratory as needed.
- Collect blood samples according to physician orders when phlebotomy credentialed.
Desired Qualifications
- Current certification as a West Virginia Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, or applicable state licensure where services will be performed.
- Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
- Two years of college in an applicable course of study such as nursing, biology, physical therapy, or sports medicine, or two years of experience in an emergency department or pre-hospital setting.
