Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must have all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required by the state.
  • Must successfully complete the organization dialysis training program and CPR certification.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards.
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting solutions up to 40 pounds.
  • Must complete the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; failing the test does not preclude employment if reasonable accommodation can be made.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines, including required alarm testing and the Solution Delivery System.
  • Assist with patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law, and monitor vascular access during treatment.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, blood pressures, and dialysis evaluations.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling.
  • Monitor patient responses to dialysis therapy, evaluate intradialytic problems, perform prescribed interventions, and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and collect, label, prepare, store, and arrange courier collection of laboratory specimens.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment, clean and disinfect dialysis machines and surrounding equipment between treatments, and immediately clean blood spills according to facility policy.
  • Prepare and efficiently use supplies and equipment and assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Document treatment parameters, patient responses, interventions, vital signs, and other required information accurately and promptly in treatment sheets, progress notes, and the designated clinical application.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and correct omitted entries through appropriate staff.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and infection control audits, follow infection control policies, and reinforce infection control education under nurse direction.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to provide a positive patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to the care plan.
  • Assist patients in understanding home dialysis products, benefits, treatment options, peritoneal dialysis setup, and transition to their selected modality.
  • Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Evaluate patients before discharge and perform all functions necessary for treatment termination and venous access care.

  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility is preferred.
