Requirements

  • Must work in adverse and extreme weather conditions, high voltage, high steam pressure, confined spaces, dirt, and noise; climb and work at various heights; and lift and carry moderately heavy test equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in verifying and correcting wiring diagrams, schematics, and equipment panel layouts to conform to engineering standards.
  • Assist in verifying that received and ordered equipment complies with engineering specifications and standards.
  • Assist in servicing digital fault recorders and oscillographs, including changing date and time stamps, installing and removing film, and operating test switches to energize or deenergize oscillograph elements.
  • Assist in labeling relays, transducers, test switches, switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, and associated equipment during initial installations.
  • Act as a safety person during high-voltage testing.
  • Assist in installing, testing, calibrating, and maintaining weather and environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Assist in installing, servicing, repairing, and calibrating meters, transducers, satellite communication equipment, and recording instruments associated with Energy Management System data acquisition.
  • Assist with calculations involving current, voltage, phase angle, impedance, power factor, and capacitance using vector analysis and other electrical concepts.
  • Assist in servicing energized equipment and diagnosing faulty operation of solid-state or electromechanical voltage regulators and transformer voltage-level control equipment with automatic tap changers.
  • Assist in conducting overhaul tests on network and underground voltage transformers.
  • Assist with high-voltage testing, including hipot and power-factor testing, near voltages exceeding 10 kilovolts.
  • Assist in calibrating and maintaining system protective relays and test equipment, including high-voltage dielectric testing of insulating oils.
  • Assist in organizing substation and generating-station data and databases.
  • Assist with acceptance tests on new or used substation and generation-plant protective devices.
  • Assist in installing, maintaining, and repairing supervisory control, data acquisition, energy management, load control, remote alarming equipment, master and remote terminal units, and associated transducers and sensing equipment.
  • Assist in servicing and repairing computers, relays, electrical and electronic subassemblies, and test equipment.
  • Assist in installing, inspecting, adjusting, maintaining, and testing line traps, tuning units, carrier equipment, and protective transfer-trip equipment.
  • Assist in installing, inspecting, testing, repairing, cleaning, calibrating, adjusting, and maintaining electronic devices for other departments.
  • Assist in installing, servicing, testing, calibrating, and repairing electronic circuits, metering devices, recording equipment, data-link equipment, and other devices associated with the Energy Management System.
  • Assist with installing, testing, and repairing leased-line, fiber-optic, microwave, satellite-radio, and cellular communication systems and media used for supervisory control, telemetry, and system-protection schemes.
  • Use specialized tools and test equipment with extreme accuracy for precision equipment adjustments.

Duke Energy cuts Eastern NC and Asheville rate increase from 15.1% to 9.3%

Duke Energy Progress has agreed to reduce its proposed rate increase for customers in eastern North Carolina and the Asheville area from 15.1% to 9.3% over two years. The average residential customer will pay an additional $9.62 per month starting January, plus $5.89 more beginning January 2028. The settlement also caps Duke's return on equity at 9.8%. This follows significant pushback from state leaders and customers after Duke Energy reported $5 billion in profits in 2025 and over $1 billion in net income last quarter. The North Carolina Utilities Commission will review the proposal starting 11 August, with a final decision expected this autumn. Duke Energy Carolinas previously lowered its rate increase to 9.5%. Both Duke utilities will merge into one by 1 January 2026.
