Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or have an education equivalency for licensing.
  • Have two years of acute hospital experience or surgical-area experience as a clinical nurse.
  • Have three years of experience as a clinical documentation specialist.
  • Have two years of demonstrated progressive leadership experience.
  • Hold the required Registered Nurse license for the applicable work location: Illinois RN licensure; Missouri RN licensure from a compact state or Missouri licensure; Oklahoma RN licensure from a compact state or Oklahoma licensure; or Wisconsin RN licensure from a compact state or Wisconsin licensure.
  • Be able to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 0–25 pounds; sit, stand, walk, reach, and perform repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements; use near and far vision and distinguish colors; use hearing and speech for oral communication; and perform keyboard use or data entry.
  • Be able to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, squat, twist, grip, and lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 25–50 pounds, and rarely climb.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily operations and resources of the assigned Clinical Documentation Improvement team, including strategic operating goals, objectives, data analysis, operational performance reporting, justification, and corrective action.
  • Provide ongoing Clinical Documentation Improvement support through extensive collaboration with physicians, nursing, coding, quality, and leadership.
  • Facilitate improvements to clinical documentation through chart review and educational training sessions with the Clinical Documentation Improvement Educator, physicians, and other clinical professionals.
  • Initiate corrective actions to resolve problem areas identified between Clinical Documentation Improvement and other organizational areas.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Documentation Improvement Educator on regional education.
  • Provide ongoing clinical documentation management program education for new staff, including new clinical documentation registered nurses, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Participate in directing and educating all phases of the clinical documentation process.
  • Support and implement technologies designed to improve or ensure accurate depiction of clinical services, patient severity of illness, and risk of mortality.
  • Conduct audits of Clinical Documentation Improvement reviews against quality, coding, and mortality criteria.
  • Provide feedback to staff and the Clinical Documentation Improvement Educator and Director.
  • Report monthly Clinical Documentation Improvement metrics regarding key performance indicators and staff productivity.
  • Strengthen technical coding practices and clinician documentation by reviewing patient records with flagged complications to ensure coding accurately reflects the patient’s clinical course and complexity and validates accurate risk adjustment for administrative metrics used in government incentive and penalty programs.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and department managers for revenue integrity, coding and data quality, case management, and health information management.
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills to promote effective and efficient review of physician documentation and the medical record.
  • Communicate with assigned regional or ministry physician leaders.
  • Participate in monthly medical management meetings to report Clinical Documentation Improvement metrics and act as a subject matter expert for inquiries.
  • Recruit, engage, develop, lead, and manage assigned staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist credential.
  • Epic experience.
  • Five years of acute-care Clinical Documentation Improvement experience.
  • Pediatric Clinical Documentation Improvement experience.
