Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Completion of a PCA externship, PCA internal internship, six months of direct patient care experience, or enrollment in a school of nursing program with a completed first clinical rotation is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, or instructor certification, is required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform essential job functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • The ability to perform basic activities of daily living patient-care tasks within defined unit-specific limits is required.
Responsibilities
  • Communicate appropriately and carry out delegated nursing-assistant-level tasks for assigned age-specific and diverse patient populations under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Conduct hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met and record data according to policy and procedure.
  • Report patient observations, problems, and pertinent care information to licensed personnel in a clear and timely manner.
  • Assist patients with elimination, hygiene, comfort, safety, nutrition, and progress activity.
  • Provide direct patient care according to patient- and family-centered care standards and the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Document administered care, diagnostic measurements, treatments, and procedures according to established policies and procedures.
  • Respond to the call-light system, contact nursing personnel as appropriate, and follow through on patient needs.
  • Maintain, clean, and stock equipment and supplies on the assigned unit.
  • Serve as an in-house courier when needed, including retrieving blood, hand-delivering laboratory specimens, and transporting teleboxes.
  • Organize workflow, resolve basic and routine matters, and manage multiple ongoing priorities while seeking guidance when needed.
  • Provide bedside handoff at shift change to support patient-centered care.
  • Conduct hourly rounding using the four P’s and report near misses.
  • Support initiatives to prevent pressure injuries, patient falls, and hospital-acquired infections.
  • Assist with patient and staffing needs across the service line or hospital as competencies allow.
  • Manage time and prioritize daily tasks efficiently while assisting coworkers as needed.
  • Offer solutions in performance-improvement projects and shared-governance activities.
  • Identify self-development needs, seek guidance from preceptors and licensed personnel, and complete ongoing development planning.
