Requirements
- Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
- Must hold CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid certifications.
- Must hold current YMCA lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certification and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 60 days of hire.
- Must obtain Oxygen Administration certification within 30 days of hire.
- Must maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Must pass the lifeguard water test.
- Must remain alert, sit or stand for extended periods, hear noises and distinguish distress signals, continuously scan all pool areas with clear vision, perform strenuous physical tasks for water rescue, and communicate verbally across normal and loud distances.
Responsibilities
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area.
- Know and review emergency procedures and respond immediately to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the Safe-in-Six model.
- Complete related reports as required.
- Maintain positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Apply pool and aquatic-area safety rules, policies, and guidelines consistently.
- Maintain accurate records required by the YMCA and the state Health Department code.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
- Perform chemical testing when not guarding and take appropriate action.
- Attend staff meetings and in-service training.
