Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • COA and/or COT certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • At least five years of relevant experience is required.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles is required.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations is required.
  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan is required.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others is required.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day direction to ophthalmic technicians, patient coordinators, and professional staff in assigned support areas.
  • Adjust daily schedules based on patient schedules, available staffing, and patient flow in clinic areas.
  • Respond to clinical and patient demands throughout the day to ensure efficient staff utilization and maintain patient flow and consistency.
  • Perform duties as a functioning ophthalmic technician or support personnel, including testing or coordinating based on clinical background and experience.
  • Maintain a working understanding of functions performed by ophthalmic specialists, pod coordinators, and support personnel.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of clinical information systems that support technical functions.
  • Schedule weekly time working in clinical departments to observe patient flow and maintain clinical skills.
  • Coordinate schedules and work with physicians and providers to determine staffing needs and special circumstances requiring adjustments.
  • Assume further training needs, when required, to gain proficiency in areas of clinical need.
  • Mentor assigned staff to provide stability and development opportunities within the organization.
  • Provide training opportunities, identify training needs of assigned staff, and ensure continued training to maintain competency.
  • Ensure daily operation of clinical areas meets the needs of patients and physicians and is provided according to accepted standards of care.
  • Establish and continuously assess the effectiveness of internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
  • Ensure employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policies and procedures.
