Grail is building the world’s largest automated blood testing lab. This lab utilizes a wide variety of off the shelf lab automation solutions, controlled and orchestrated by our custom software to ensure high uptime, high throughput, and low error rate processing of patient samples. Our team has built a scalable software solution that will be launched into production during your internship. This provides Rising Seniors or Masters level students an amazing opportunity to get hands-on experience with high throughput biotech lab processing, robotics, automation, data, and software systems. This initial launch will form the foundation of a system that must be scaled to national population screening size over the coming years as Grail continues to execute on its mission.
You will expected to be onsite in Menlo Park, CA with our team 2-5 days a week during your internship. Start date is June 3, end date is Aug 16. There is a one week unpaid summer break July 1-5th.
You will:
- Work with an interdisciplinary team of Software Engineers, Hardware/Automation Engineers, Biologists, Chemists, and Operations experts to solve hard technical and execution challenges.
- Get hands on with automation systems.
- Work with Operations to solve challenging human/software interface problems.
- Travel to our North Carolina production facility.
Your background should include:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program, ideally in Computer Science, biomedical engineering, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrated experience with hardware software interfaces.
- Deep technical thinker with a willingness to solve interdisciplinary problems and work across domain boundaries.
- Proficient in one or more programming languages (Python, Go, Javascript preferred) with a strong aptitude for learning new technologies.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and navigate ambiguity.
- Strong communication skills, essential for cross-functional collaboration and idea sharing.A passion for innovation and the desire to make a significant impact in a pioneering role.

The expected hourly pay scale for this position is Bachelors: $40/hr or Masters: $50/hr. Actual hourly pay will consider skills, experience, and location.
Based on the role, colleagues may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan tied to company and individual performance, or an incentive plan. We also offer a long-term incentive plan to align company and colleague success over time.
