Requirements
- For the nurse practitioner pathway, graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing is required.
- For the nurse practitioner pathway, national certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center is required.
- For the nurse practitioner pathway, licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- For the physician assistant pathway, a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is required.
- For the physician assistant pathway, graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- For the physician assistant pathway, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- For the physician assistant pathway, licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
- Proficiency with computers is required.
- Strong communication skills are required.
- The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The role requires working closely with others, working protracted or irregular hours, and working around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, in collaboration with the clinical or faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of urology patients and caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with the clinical team, participate in directing care, and coordinate perioperative care, discharge planning, and post-hospital and ambulatory follow-up.
- Participate in the education of residents and medical and nursing students.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within applicable guidelines, protocols, licensing, certification, hospital privileges, and scope of practice.
- Participate in all aspects of global urology patient management throughout the health system.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for urology patients and families in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure urology evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments and participate in perioperative patient management.
- Order additional tests or consultations when appropriate, in collaboration with urology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform and document comprehensive clinical evaluations in the medical record.
- Coordinate services and tests needed for patient discharge, postoperative care, and outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Perform urological procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized plans of care including teaching, discharge planning, follow-up, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care across the age continuum appropriate to the individual's education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex urology patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
- Collect outcome measures in the clinic and assist with outcome-measure collection for urology faculty, administrators, and directors.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff on education plans.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote a learning environment responsive to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain current knowledge and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for urology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate to the area of expertise.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations in patient medical records according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in urology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role in delivering care to urology patients and families during inpatient hospitalization and in ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUM and University Health Associates Performance Improvement Plan and apply its findings to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret urology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length-of-stay data, access-to-care data, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Clinical or surgical urology experience is preferred.
- A Master's level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
