  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Science
  • 5+ years' experience as a technical contributor in evolving engineering and manufacturing environments

  • Strong experience in a manufacturing, test, or low-volume integration environment where process discipline, documentation, and quality matter
  • Comfort reading and interpreting engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and CAD models
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills; ability to methodically isolate issues in complex systems under time pressure
  • A strong, systems-level mindset and demonstrated experience working hands-on with at least two of the following: Laser/optical systems, Mechanical systems infrastructure and cable management, Vacuum systems, Precision motion stages or opto-mechanical assemblies, Control electronics, power distribution, low-noise measurement systems
  • A customer-focused and one-team mindset with proactive communication across levels in a fast-paced environment
  • An ability to travel up to 3 months at a time during deployments and 25% otherwise

Responsibilities
  • Partner with other field engineers and scientists to own the full-stack installation of quantum computing systems at customer data centers, domestically and internationally
  • Travel to customer sites for multi-week to multi-month deployments to install and integrate complex subsystems (optics, lasers, vacuum hardware, control electronics, racks, enclosures, networking, and cooling systems) with meticulous attention to detail
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in the field; drive root cause analysis for failures
  • Be the critical link between in-plant engineering teams and field deployments; capture real-world learnings and feed back into design, manufacturing, and test to accelerate deployments
  • Execute and refine installation work instructions, checklists, and troubleshooting guides for future deployments and for manufacturing/field teams
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure systems leaving IonQ facilities are deployment-ready and reflect customer site realities
  • Act as the technical face of IonQ on site; build trust with customer engineers, facilities staff, and leadership
  • Document all as-built configurations, deviations, and environment-specific considerations for each installation
  • Hands-on work with free-space optics, high-precision lasers, advanced mechanical assemblies, cryogenic systems; operate lifting equipment with safety
  • Facilitate and lead daily deployment standups, coordinate on-site deployment activities, report status, risks, and trade-offs, escalate as needed
  • Develop and maintain tooling BOMs for customer-facing system deployments
  • Maintain tight communication loops with IonQ’s Engineering, Manufacturing, and Program Management teams throughout deployments
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability/Design for Excellence, structured Root Cause Corrective Action, and continuous improvement in production or New Product Introduction context
  • Ability to act independently to uncover and resolve issues in development and implementation of operational programs and factories and/or supplier health development
  • Experience aligning optical systems (free-space and fiber), verifying laser paths, and ensuring stability under real-world environmental conditions
  • Basic familiarity with scripting (Python, etc.) for test automation, data collection, or simple tooling
  • Experience working with trapped-ion, cold-atom, photonics, semiconductor, or other advanced R&D/production tools

Washington governor directs $500K to IonQ's quantum computing facility expansion in Bothell

Governor Bob Ferguson has directed $500,000 from Washington's Economic Development Strategic Reserve Fund to support IonQ's expansion in Bothell. The quantum computing manufacturer, whose largest shareholders include Vanguard, BlackRock and Morgan Stanley Investment Management, will use the funding for building upgrades, workforce expenses and expansion costs. The state funding is matched by over $14 million in private investment. IonQ opened the nation's first dedicated quantum computing manufacturing facility in Bothell in 2024, which has since expanded into a 100,000-square-foot hub. The expansion is expected to create between 1,200 and 2,000 jobs over five years. IonQ develops quantum computing systems for complex problems in healthcare, energy and cybersecurity. The Strategic Reserve Fund uses unclaimed lottery prize money for economic development projects.

Horizon Quantum to purchase IonQ's 256-qubit trapped-ion system for quantum software development

Horizon Quantum Holdings has entered a strategic agreement with IonQ to purchase one of IonQ's first 6th-generation, chip-based 256-qubit trapped-ion systems.
