Database Administration Specialist:
MS SQL Server We are looking for an experienced SQL Server DBA responsible for installing, creating, administrating, maintaining and supporting databases by ensuring their performance, availability and security to provide a stable database environment. Additionally, the role may lean heavily towards migration activities to AWS, both IaaS and RDS for SQL Server. The tasks that form part of the role:
Daily operations responsibilities include the following items/ activities:
Database administration of SQL Server 2016-2019 including installation, patching, support, releases, monitoring, backup and recovery.
Assisting with performance tuning, delving into execution plans, trouble shooting, indexes and statistics.
Troubleshooting Sev 1 issues and deciphering alerts.
Working with clusters and assisting with server issue investigations.
Releasing code and working on Change controlled requests/incidents both in and out of normal working ours.
Working collaboratively across teams on ad-hoc projects. Assisting with PostgreSQL support. Support and on-call activities include:
Work as part of a team and providing support to users when required both in and outside normal working hours.
Working across various teams to troubleshoot issues and deep dive for root cause analysis and resolution, attending meetings and discussing outcomes.
Working on a range of resolutions from server availability issues, to query coding issues and database configuration, Migration to AWS – may form part or a majority of the roll.
Working on strategies and plans to mitigate on-premise to AWS, or AWS to AWS, automating when possible.
Creating/working with teams to create documentation surrounding migration activities, identifying requirements, bottle necks and limitations.
Actively Undertaking migration activities.
What you need to have:
Minimum of 10 years’ hands-on experience as a database administrator of MS SQL Server Databases in production environments:
Experience in managing 24*7 production servers, large databases and multiple instances.
Knowledge of AWS database operations and migrations as well as migration strategies and execution.
Creating and sizing database storage structures and database objects. Capacity planning.
Planning for and actual backup and recovery/DR of databases/environments. Good knowledge of SSRS and SSIS. Power BI a bonus.
Advanced technical knowledge of replication methods such as Log Shipping, Always On/HA/Mirroring/AG’s/WSFC.
PowerShell scripting for automation activities or other automation techniques.
Experience with MS SQL Agent and features: maintenance plans, scheduled jobs, alerts and DB Mail.
Familiarity with MSSQL features such as TDE, Compression, MDW and DMVs. Good knowledge of and skills in database security design and implementation. Other Skills and Requirements
Ability to work independently and as a team on multiple tasks, commitment to deadlines and prioritise issues.
Good knowledge of and skills in database security design and implementation across DB types.
Understanding methodologies and experience of Change Control and ticketing systems such as ServiceNow.
What makes you stand out:
Experience working in cloud environments (AWS/Azure).
Experience migrating on-site infrastructure to AWS for MS SQL Server. Database operations within AWS/Azure for MS SQL Server/ RDS for SQL Server.
Experience with Data Dog monitoring and NetBackup for MS SQL Server. Experience with: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle.
Qualifications:
Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or equivalent industry experience.
AWS Certifications a bonus
