Requirements
  • A Juris Doctor degree.
  • For consideration at the Assistant Dean level, prior law school career advising experience or significant legal practice experience, typically five years, is required; candidates without prior law school career advising experience and with less practice experience may be considered for the Director-level position.
  • Knowledge of career counseling and career development theory and practice, or the demonstrated ability to develop that knowledge through continuing education and on-the-job training.
  • Knowledge of legal career opportunities, particularly in the public sector employment market and with state courts, as well as employment trends in the United States legal profession.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including frequent public speaking.
  • Demonstrated ability to build constructive relationships with students, graduates, employer representatives, bar and professional associations, faculty, administrators, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure in an extremely busy environment.
  • Ability to work additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive data.
Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and group career counseling to J.D. students and alumni regarding career goals, professional development, employment options, job search strategies, resume and cover letter preparation, networking, and interviewing skills.
  • Serve as the primary Office of Career Services point of contact and career advisor for students and alumni seeking internships and post-graduate public sector employment, including positions with government agencies, civil legal services offices, public defenders, prosecutors, nonprofit organizations, and state court judicial clerkships.
  • Design, plan, and deliver job search, career, and professional development programs, including workshops, panels, webinars, presentations, and career or job fairs.
  • Direct staff members and student assistants in implementing career programs.
  • Identify job opportunities and develop job search resources and targeted communications for students and alumni.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for students seeking post-graduate fellowships through Equal Justice Works and the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, and positions through Federal Honors and similar programs.
  • Oversee the Law School’s participation in the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair, the Peggy Browning Workers' Rights Conference, and other public sector career or job fairs.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean for Employer Relations in developing and maintaining relationships with public sector employers.
  • Assist with oversight and management of the Law School’s public service post-graduate fellowship program.
  • Collaborate with other administrative departments on public sector externship and pro bono initiatives for students.
  • Act as the administrative lead for the Law School’s annual Government and Public Interest Interview Program.
  • Track, collect, and report student and graduate employment data.
  • Support employer development efforts by cultivating employer and alumni contacts to generate employment opportunities for students and graduates.
  • Participate in National Association for Law Placement activities, alumni events, bar association events, professional networking, and continuing education events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Three or more years of experience as a practicing attorney in the public sector.
  • Experience supporting public sector-related externships, pro bono opportunities, summer public service stipends, and post-graduate public service fellowships.
  • Proficiency using technology for career counseling, program development, and marketing or outreach to students, graduates, and employers.
  • Knowledge of using social media platforms, including LinkedIn and Instagram, for networking and communication.
  • Knowledge of how to identify public sector career opportunities or the ability to acquire that knowledge.
  • Existing relationships with a variety of public sector employers.
