Requirements
  • A licensed Respiratory Therapist credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist or Certified Respiratory Therapist is required.
  • Expertise in mechanical ventilation, airway management, and critical care respiratory therapies is required.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in high-stress, high-acuity clinical environments is required.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and documentation skills are required.
  • An Associate's degree in Respiratory Care or equivalent years of experience and education is required.
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association and the applicable state respiratory-care credentials are required.
  • The role requires constant standing and walking, frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, reaching, keyboard use, data entry, vision, smell, and hearing; occasional lifting or moving of patients and driving; and rare crawling and running.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate and manage peripheral intravenous access and assist with intravenous therapies within scope and facility policy.
  • Perform arterial and venous blood gas sampling and assist with laboratory specimen collection.
  • Apply and assist with splinting and patient positioning to support respiratory function and patient safety.
  • Chaperone physicians during examinations and procedures as required.
  • Monitor and support patients undergoing conscious sedation, including airway management, oxygenation, ventilation, and continuous patient assessment.
  • Set up, operate, adjust, and monitor invasive and noninvasive ventilator support, including ventilator modes, settings, alarms, and troubleshooting based on patient condition and provider orders.
  • Manage noninvasive ventilation therapies such as bilevel positive airway pressure, continuous positive airway pressure, and high-flow oxygen delivery systems.
  • Perform comprehensive respiratory assessments, reassessments, and documentation, including breath sounds, work of breathing, arterial blood gases, and ventilator parameters.
  • Identify changes in patient respiratory status and respond appropriately, including escalation of care and collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Participate in emergency response situations, including rapid response and code events, by providing airway and ventilatory support.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control practices, patient safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assess patients for the appropriate type and frequency of treatment and develop a plan of care based on diagnosis.
  • Provide respiratory care services in accordance with physician orders, department policies and procedures, and guidelines.
  • Implement and monitor patient care plans and equipment, and monitor, record, and communicate patient condition.
  • Perform advanced respiratory care modalities.
  • Evaluate respiratory practice, medication administration, and treatment based on patient outcomes.
  • Educate patients and families about health conditions and provide information about community support groups and other available programs.
  • Assist with care, calibration, and maintenance of equipment; maintain departmental inventory levels for supplies and equipment; and process equipment using established cleaning and sterilization procedures.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and rapid responses.
Desired Qualifications
  • A minimum of two years of recent critical care experience is preferred.
  • Emergency Room experience is preferred.
