Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • For Title I schools, meet the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act and have either six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification through the required renewal process; training will be provided if needed.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Google Apps.
  • Working knowledge of successful instructional delivery methods and general classroom activities and routines.
  • Ability to protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and other applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, collaborate effectively, motivate students, monitor student safety and well-being, recognize and support students with varied backgrounds and needs, communicate clearly in oral and written form, and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, students, parents, agencies, businesses, and the public.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds, and constant exertion of up to 10 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Provide support and assistance to teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including familiarity with students’ Individualized Education Plans, while ensuring an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Assist teachers with planning and organizing, evaluating instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing lesson materials.
  • Demonstrate the professional and technical skills necessary to function effectively in the classroom and support student achievement and the school program.
  • Maintain a positive disposition, exercise good judgment, and remain calm when dealing with students.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting student progress toward independence and self-determination.
  • Assist teachers with implementing low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices to meet classroom and individual student needs.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth in the assigned area.
  • Coordinate, assist with, and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Assist students with special health care needs, including personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility assistance, lifting, positioning, transferring, seizure-control activities, feeding, adaptive equipment, hearing aids, braille, assistive listening devices, and augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Provide behavioral assistance and use Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • For SATA assignments, serve as a one-on-one instructional assistant for a student with severe to profound learning disabilities.
  • For SATA assignments, attend and successfully complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs, including physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disabilities or impairments requiring additional or specialized services or accommodations.
