Responsibilities
  • Monitor security alerts and events using security information and event management (SIEM) systems.

The report comes as the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is creating a defining energy challenge for the technology sector. AI workloads are raising rack power demand by up to tenfold, placing new pressure on electricity supply, cooling and infrastructure. At the same time, AI is emerging as a powerful tool for improving efficiency, integrating renewable energy and accelerating low-carbon innovation beyond the technology sector. The report showcases Tencent's response to the AI-energy challenge: improving the efficiency of computing infrastructure, aligning electricity demand more closely with renewable energy availability, and applying AI and digital technologies to support decarbonization beyond its own operations, while tracking progress toward its 2030 carbon neutrality commitments. Tencent reports higher renewable electricity use while expanding AI infrastructure, efficiency programs and climate technology efforts toward 2030 carbon neutrality. Tencent says it remains on course to reach carbon neutrality across its operations and supply chain by 2030, even as AI raises the energy intensity of its data centers. Its midterm climate report highlights higher renewable electricity use, denser computing infrastructure, AI based energy scheduling and climate technology programs, but leaves tougher questions around absolute power demand unresolved. The uncomfortable arithmetic sits behind almost every figure in the report. Tencent says AI workloads can raise rack power demand from roughly 6 to 8 kW to 30 to 100 kW or more. That changes the engineering problem for operators. Power distribution, cooling capacity, grid connections and capital planning all become harder when a cluster can consume several times the electricity of the infrastructure it replaces. Tencent is responding partly through T AIDC, its architecture for high density AI data centers, which the company says can deliver power supply efficiency of as much as 98%. For infrastructure buyers, that number is useful but incomplete. Power conversion efficiency is only one layer of data center energy performance. Cooling, utilization, workload placement, chip efficiency and the carbon intensity of available electricity still determine the larger environmental and operating cost. More efficient infrastructure can also lower the cost of running additional compute. That creates a familiar problem in technology economics: efficiency gains do not necessarily translate into lower total consumption when demand is expanding faster than each unit becomes cheaper to operate. Power density changes economics. Tencent's renewable electricity numbers show faster movement. Renewable electricity consumption rose from 22.0% in 2024 to 48.5% in 2025, according to the report, while company owned data centers reached an 82.9% renewable share. Tencent also says it has procured more than 6.5 billion kWh of green electricity since announcing its carbon neutrality commitment. Those figures matter to customers that increasingly ask cloud and digital service suppliers about the carbon profile of infrastructure. They matter to regulators and investors as well. Still, renewable procurement is not the same thing as eliminating the physical constraints created by rising electricity demand. AI clusters need power where and when workloads run. Renewable generation, meanwhile, is variable and geographically uneven. Tencent says it is working with partners on AI based scheduling intended to align data center workloads more closely with renewable power availability. Technically, there is logic here. Flexible jobs can move in time or potentially across locations. Not every workload is flexible. Interactive inference, financial systems, gaming services, communications and other latency sensitive applications cannot simply wait for favorable generation conditions. Data sovereignty rules can restrict geographic movement. Network capacity imposes another limit. The scheduling opportunity may therefore be meaningful, but narrower than the broad concept first suggests. Grid constraints stay physical. Tencent is also presenting AI as a tool for decarbonization outside its own computing estate. In steel production, the company points to scheduling software and digital twins that could help plants alter when and how they consume energy, potentially lowering costs, reducing emissions and supporting grid stability. Heavy industry is an important test because software can optimize processes without changing the underlying chemistry or capital stock. Better scheduling may reduce waste. It cannot, by itself, replace furnaces, secure cleaner electricity, solve hydrogen economics or finance new industrial equipment. The commercial question is whether digital optimization produces savings large enough to justify integration across plants designed around existing operating practices. There is another tension. Technology companies increasingly argue that AI's energy costs should be weighed against efficiency gains enabled elsewhere. That may be valid in specific deployments. It becomes much harder to establish at company or economy scale because avoided emissions depend on counterfactuals, adoption rates and whether customers use efficiency gains to consume less or simply produce more. Climate tech meets capital. Tencent's CarbonX Program supports work in carbon removal, carbon utilization and long duration energy storage. Its TanLIVE platform is intended to connect governments, investors and climate technology participants while improving access to data, projects and investment opportunities. These efforts place Tencent closer to a climate technology ecosystem that has struggled with a different problem from software: deployment can be capital intensive, slow and dependent on policy. Carbon removal projects need durable buyers. Long duration storage must compete within electricity markets whose revenue structures vary sharply. Carbon utilization can look attractive technically while still facing weak economics or limited demand. A digital platform can improve discovery and coordination.
