Requirements
  • The employee must obtain and maintain certifications necessary to support students with special needs.

Responsibilities
  • The paraprofessional supports the preschool teacher in implementing the preschool curriculum and maintaining a positive and safe learning environment.
  • The paraprofessional assists licensed special education teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and other evaluative staff in implementing student goals.
  • The paraprofessional performs student tasks including meal preparation, feeding, and lunch clean-up while implementing communication, oral motor, sensory integration, and physical individualized education program goals.
  • The paraprofessional carries out instructional programs and lessons in learning environments designated in lesson plans.
  • Under teacher supervision, the paraprofessional works with small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
  • The paraprofessional assists students with medical tasks such as dispensing medication, tube feeding, catheterization, toileting, diapering, and suctioning.
  • The paraprofessional cleans and disinfects regurgitation, blood, and urine and follows infectious disease control practices.
  • The paraprofessional works with confidential special education student information.
  • The paraprofessional maneuvers and secures wheelchairs and provides initial first aid or emergency care.
  • The paraprofessional assists students with physical tasks such as putting on and removing outerwear, moving between rooms, and using the lavatory.
  • The paraprofessional carries out programming using physical therapy support equipment and sanitizes equipment and materials.
  • The paraprofessional monitors behavior contracts and reward systems.
  • The paraprofessional assists with non-standardized testing of students.
  • The paraprofessional develops and implements games and teaching aids and tutors students in various subject areas.
  • The paraprofessional assists students in preparing, producing, and maintaining assigned materials and equipment.
  • The paraprofessional coordinates assignments and job tasks with classroom teachers and employers.
  • The paraprofessional works with students individually and in groups.
  • The paraprofessional assists students in finding library materials and books and conducts story time.
  • The paraprofessional monitors students during recess, hall duty, passing periods, and bus loading.
  • The paraprofessional supervises students using various computer programs and assists with recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks.
  • The paraprofessional accompanies and assists students in the classroom setting.
  • The paraprofessional attends required meetings, conferences, pre-job training, ongoing training, and school-year meetings.
  • The paraprofessional serves as a resource to the student personnel evaluation team concerning assigned students.
  • The paraprofessional works with teachers to integrate assistive technology into classrooms.
  • The paraprofessional maintains student files and updates information as appropriate.
  • The paraprofessional maintains, orders, and organizes program materials and equipment inventory.
  • The paraprofessional collects data for assessment and monitoring purposes.
  • The paraprofessional completes daily paperwork, including attendance reports, detention slips, student referral slips, student passes, and physical therapy charts.
  • The paraprofessional performs miscellaneous clerical duties and assists other staff members.
  • The paraprofessional laminates materials as needed and prepares bulletin boards for parents and programs.
  • The paraprofessional reports consistently as scheduled and performs other assigned duties.
