Requirements
  • A high school degree, bachelor's degree, or equivalent years of experience is required.
  • Completion of medical interpreting training through a medical interpreting training school, the Foreign Service Institute, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters, including 40 or 60 hours of medical training, is required.
  • Experience with State Department work, refugees, the Food and Drug Administration, Health and Human Services, medical, legal, or housing authority settings is required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and may be required to pass additional project- or client-specific background checks during employment.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills.
  • Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to respond effectively to customers with a sense of urgency.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Acrobat.
  • Must be able to handle and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to be on call and respond to potential jobs within 48 hours.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties for extended periods, sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen, and use a computer and office productivity tools with sufficient speed.
  • Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
  • May be required to work a flexible schedule, including holidays and hours outside normal business hours.
  • Must be able to travel to different locations for in-person interpretation and may travel for business or professional development.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately interpret spoken work situations, including lectures, conversations, and meetings.
  • Use technology to transcribe spoken English in some settings.
  • Provide interpretation within California for individuals facing a language barrier in education, legal, medical, environmental, and social services settings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
