Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school or college of nursing is required, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing required for Primary Charge Nurse I.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a registered nurse in a direct-care patient setting is required for Primary Charge Nurse I.
  • External candidates must have at least 2 years of experience functioning in a Charge Nurse role.
  • Applicants must hold a current Registered Nurse license in South Carolina or a current compact or multistate Registered Nurse license from a recognized National Council of State Boards of Nursing Compact State and must not be a permanent resident of South Carolina.
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification is required.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire or designation as Primary Charge Nurse.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required for the Emergency Department and when designated by specialty standards or the clinical manager, and must be obtained within 6 months when applicable.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is required for Women and Infant Care services and must be obtained within 6 months when applicable.
  • Required certifications must be kept current.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing principles, theories, methods, and techniques is required to provide and evaluate ongoing patient care.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, teammate skills, safety hazards, precautions, patient acuity, licensure, and competency is required.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving problems, preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, establishing collaborative working relationships, analyzing situations, applying critical thinking, communicating effectively, and remaining calm during emergencies is required.
  • The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, lifting and moving patients, and intermittent handling of loads up to 50 pounds.
  • The role requires corrected hearing and vision within the normal range and the ability to work around blood, body fluids, tissue, infectious materials, communicable diseases, and other healthcare-environment hazards.
  • The role requires working under stressful conditions, deadlines, or irregular hours and may require call, weekend, and holiday work.
Responsibilities
  • Provide and oversee patient nursing care in accordance with established standards, professional nursing practice, and the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care while ensuring that care delivery is safe, equitable, patient-centered, timely, efficient, effective, holistic, and evidence-based.
  • Support unit-based shared governance and decentralized decision-making structures and processes.
  • Serve as a clinical role model and lead by example in making the patient experience a priority.
  • Pursue activities that support smooth clinical operations, patient flow, and compliance on assigned units.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals and maintain collegial working relationships across disciplines to meet patient needs.
  • Provide direct patient care assignments when required by unit needs or established requirements.
  • Audit patient medical records to verify that orders have been carried out, laboratory tests are posted, nursing care is documented, and patient progress is described.
  • Review core measures, key performance indicators, and other outcome metrics relevant to the unit and patient population.
  • Assist the Clinical Specialist with updating unit visual-management boards each shift.
  • Engage in patient-care performance-improvement projects and implement evidence-based practice changes.
  • Run shift safety huddles, report safety concerns and staffing concerns, review device utilization, and review surgical schedules.
  • Delegate unit and patient responsibilities to nursing staff according to each staff member’s education, training, availability, licensure, competency, skill mix, and patient acuity.
  • Provide feedback to the clinical manager regarding nursing personnel performance.
  • Participate in the peer interview process for new hires and remain actively engaged in the unit-based council.
  • Assist with educating nursing staff and students by observing performance, identifying learning needs, and participating in peer consultation, mentorship, unit conferences, case studies, patient rounds, and in-service programs.
  • Serve as a nursing student preceptor when needed.
  • Interact with patients, families, physicians, employees, visitors, and other internal and external customers.
  • Take call and work weekends, holidays, or irregular hours based on departmental needs.
