  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program, or certification as a CMA, CCMA, or RMA, is required; alternatively, candidates may meet eligibility requirements to take the CMA or RMA examination and obtain certification within six months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • Knowledge of clinical skills required for medical assistant certification or registration is required.
  • Effective problem-solving and prioritization skills are required.
  • The ability to process information confidentially and maintain patient confidentiality is required.
  • Clear and effective communication with patients, doctors, and other staff is required.
  • Personal computer skills and the ability to input and retrieve data from the organization's computerized systems are required.
  • The ability to work independently and function as an integral team member with other healthcare professionals is required.
  • The role requires sustained alertness and concentration during interactive, repetitive, or detailed computer work; considerable standing or walking; regular lifting of objects weighing 20 pounds or less; assisting with lifting and moving patients; and occasional straining or fatiguing positions and motions.
Responsibilities
  • Provide general nursing functions for the practice under a provider's direction.
  • Record vital signs and immunizations, perform initial patient assessments, obtain concise patient histories, and provide clinical information and support to providers.
  • Process and post information to patient charts.
  • Educate patients and families about medications, treatments, care, and referrals.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, including assessments, histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine hearing or vision testing.
  • Document pertinent information in patient charts and accurately complete required chart documentation.
  • Maintain documentation standards and review charts before appointments to ensure requests and documents are in place.
  • Administer treatments as requested by the physician.
  • Obtain specimens for urine testing, phlebotomy, and other procedures.
  • Perform laboratory tests as directed by the physician.
  • Set up and assist physicians with procedures such as laceration repair and Pap or pelvic examinations.
  • Schedule outside tests or procedures, including X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging, in other departments or facilities.
  • Prepare patients for tests and procedures by providing appropriate instructions.
  • Coordinate admissions and referrals and call in prescriptions.
  • Stock examination rooms with supplies and conduct daily supply inventories, reporting items that need to be ordered.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling in the electronic medical record system as required.
  • Screen calls and determine urgency, the need for appointments, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
  • Assist with completing miscellaneous patient forms, including workers' compensation and disability forms.
  • Attend staff, educational, and other required meetings.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.

  • Electronic medical record experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills are desirable.
  • The ability to maintain positive customer service and establish effective working relationships with physicians, office staff, and employees in a team environment is desirable.
