Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) for NCOA, COA, and COT
  • On the job training for NCOA
  • COA required within 12 months of hire for NCOA
  • JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) for COA
  • JCAHPO Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) for COT
  • Minimum of 1 year of ophthalmic experience and completion of a certified assistant program or equivalent for COA
  • Minimum of 2 years of specialized ophthalmic experience with completion of a certified technician program for COT
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 2 weeks of hire for all positions (MUSC Provides the BLS training FREE OF CHARGE!)
Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of general patient care activities and ophthalmic diagnostic tests for NCOA
  • Prepares patients for visits and collects medical histories for NCOA
  • Performs basic vision screenings and supports the clinical team with administrative and procedural tasks for NCOA
  • Performs advanced medical history intake and a range of ophthalmic diagnostic tests for COA
  • Administers dilation drops and assists with minor in-office procedures for COA
  • Documents clinical findings in the patient’s medical record for COA
  • Ensures exam rooms are fully prepared and maintains equipment and instruments for COA
  • Conducts complex diagnostic testing and operates advanced ophthalmic instruments for COT
  • May assist with intravitreal injections and post-operative care for COT
  • Leads clinical workflow and mentors entry-level staff for COT
  • Serves as a liaison between ophthalmologists and patients for COT
