Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Practical Nursing (Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse) and hold current appropriate state licensure.
  • Successfully complete a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis.
  • Successfully complete CPR certification.
  • Complete the Nurses Technical Training Program upon hire or soon thereafter.
  • Provide coverage at area facilities during times of short staffing or as required.
  • Meet the necessary requirements of the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Function as part of the hemodialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Participate in the implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • Report and document all new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the supervisor.
  • Promote and assist in maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Provide direct patient care for assigned patients.
  • Perform all technical aspects of dialysis procedures as prescribed and administer and monitor treatments in accordance with the current treatment plan or supervisor direction.
  • Monitor and document dialysis treatment parameters on dialysis flow sheets and document other patient-care information in the individual patient record.
  • Report significant information, changes in patient condition, or equipment problems to the supervisor.
  • Assist in developing and following the teaching plan to educate patients and families about end-stage renal disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medications.
  • Assist with emergency operational procedures.
  • Administer intravenous medication in accordance with physician orders and state nurse-practice laws.
  • Perform and document pre-treatment, interim, and post-treatment reviews of patient condition.
  • Initiate basic CPR measures during cardiac or pulmonary arrest and respond to dialysis-related emergencies.
  • Safely operate dialysis-related equipment according to proper procedures.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the dialysis facility treatment area.
  • Address blood spills immediately according to FMCNA Bloodborne Pathogen Control Policies.
  • Operate emergency equipment effectively according to standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings.
  • Assist in short-term and long-term patient-care-plan meetings.
  • Acquire current practice knowledge related to dialysis principles and techniques by participating in scheduled in-service classes.
  • Act as a resource person for other staff members.
  • Assist with coordinating care plans with the physician, dietitian, and social worker.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community and attend regional, business unit, and corporate meetings as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of medical-surgical nursing experience is preferred.
  • Hemodialysis experience is preferred but not required.
  • Intensive care unit experience is preferred but not required.
