Requirements
  • Minimum of two years recent registered nurse experience in post-anesthesia care unit or critical care setting.
  • Bachelor's Degree Required.
  • Massachusetts Registered Nurse license required.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification Required.
  • Influenza vaccination required as a condition of employment.
  • BSN required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced team environment.
Responsibilities
  • Assess all PACU patients for physical and psychological needs during the post-anesthesia recovery phase.
  • Accurately document post-operative vital signs, conduct pain assessments on admission and post-operatively, and reassess as needed.
  • Communicate with patients and home caregivers regarding post-operative condition and discharge expectations.
  • Recognize symptoms of cardiac and respiratory arrest and intervened appropriately.
  • Collaborate with other professional caregivers regarding patient condition.
  • Be competent in the use of equipment used to provide safe patient care.
  • Coordinate care with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other personnel as required.
  • Perform other duties as needed (stocking, room turnover, assisting in preoperative or PACU).
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date education file and any required licenses or certifications without reminder.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-services.
  • Behave in a positive and cooperative manner and seek resources to stay current in nursing trends and practice.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and standards of care.
  • Seek assistance from other resource persons to improve skills, knowledge and practice.
  • Assist in orientation of new employees.
  • Provide leadership as a resource person to improve patient care.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and take personal accountability for patient safety.
  • Ensure proper patient identification in accordance with Massachusetts General Brigham Health policy and procedures.
  • Document and update patient medical records in accordance with hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Perform services in compliance with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, statutes and regulations (e.g., Joint Commission, Fire Code, Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
  • Adhere to infection control standards including hand hygiene, room assignment, isolation precautions, aseptic/sterile techniques, and universal precautions; clean equipment per policy.
  • Utilize and adhere to proper procedures for handling and disposing of bio-hazardous materials.
  • Participate in hospital and/or unit-based patient safety and quality activities to support and improve patient outcomes.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues to foster a positive professional environment and share knowledge with colleagues, students, and novice practitioners.
Desired Qualifications
  • AS PAN certification strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience starting intravenous lines strongly preferred.
