Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of advising or related experience.
  • Knowledge of NACADA’s Core Values of Academic Advising, academic advising theories, models, approaches, strategies, professional standards, ethical guidelines, and expected student learning and success outcomes.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, degree programs, academic requirements and options, critical advising partners, and campus and community resources supporting student success.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and processes, and professional standards, ethical guidelines, models, methods, and evaluation techniques for coaching.
  • Novice proficiency in discussing and referring students to appropriate campus resources for mental health issues.
  • Novice proficiency in conducting research and developing and delivering training on advising tools, strategies, campus resources, and relevant updates for faculty and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Advise students by understanding and developing realistic educational and academic goals and providing input on majors, minors, future education, and career options.
  • Educate students about and assist with academic processes such as registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, change-of-curriculum submissions, university and college policies, program requirements, and transfer-credit decisions.
  • Review students’ academic records and counsel them on core and degree-course selection, course implications, and exception requests.
  • Provide input on probationary decisions.
  • Create and maintain updated student contact records and advising notes.
  • Engage students through in-person and online outreach to keep them informed of academic and professional deadlines, updates, information, and events.
  • Share academic, professional, health, and wellness resources with students and refer students with identified needs as appropriate.
  • Monitor students’ progress by reviewing and assessing academic records to determine progression status and degree-completion requirements and identify students needing intervention and guidance.
  • Lead the planning and/or delivery of department-related advising, student-success, retention, and academic-campaign events.
  • Assess students’ stages of academic development and promote their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Assist with training new staff members and student workers in the academic advising department.
  • Complete required in-class and on-the-job training and participate in advisor onboarding, Master Academic Advisor training, departmental and university training, advisor meetings, staff meetings, and supervisory meetings.

  • Knowledge of the characteristics, needs, and experiences of major and emerging student populations.
  • Knowledge of how welcoming environments are created and maintained in advising interactions for major and emerging student populations.
  • Knowledge of resources and effective responses to mental health issues affecting student well-being.
  • Knowledge of information technology applicable to advising roles.
  • Knowledge of training methods and techniques for planning, designing, developing, and delivering instructional content.
  • Experience conducting research and developing and delivering training on academic-advising topics, including organizing professional-development activities.
