Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required.
  • Meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Obtain all applicable state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • Successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital or related facility is preferred.
  • Perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting solutions and equipment.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and community locations, with possible travel to regional, business unit, and corporate meetings.
  • Pass the Ishihara color blindness test as a condition of employment; reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • Work in a healthcare environment with possible exposure to infectious and contagious diseases or materials.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis healthcare team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Provide patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain and document pre- and post-treatment vital signs, weights, vascular access evaluations, and patient responses.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling.
  • Monitor patients’ responses to dialysis therapy, evaluate intradialytic problems, and provide prescribed interventions.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled and perform required dialysis machine alarm testing, including Pressure Holding Testing.
  • Record accurate and timely treatment parameters and complete hemodialysis treatment sheets and progress notes when applicable.
  • Report significant information, changes in patient condition, unusual findings, and vascular access issues to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and document patient responses.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing, collect and prepare specimens, and ensure appropriate labeling, storage, and courier collection.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment to prevent waste.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Follow organizational policies, procedures, systems, ethical business practices, and infection control policies.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics by keeping areas safe and clean.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Complete and document participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application and review treatment sheets for completeness and required signatures.
  • Prepare initial patient charts, compile admission paperwork, and prepare or print laboratory requisitions.
  • Assist with infection control audits and reinforce infection control education for patients and families under appropriate direction.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to support the patient experience and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to plan.
  • Assist patients in understanding home dialysis products, benefits, treatment options, and peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit.
  • Assist with coordinating transition to the patient’s chosen dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
