Requirements
  • A bachelor's or higher degree in clinical laboratory technology.
  • A bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biology, chemistry, or the physical sciences, plus an advanced certificate in clinical laboratory technology.
  • Education and training sufficient to qualify for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist before 2009 under New York State Education Department Regulation 79-13.4.
  • For the bachelor's-degree path, at least four years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience after qualifying, including at least two years in a clinical laboratory with a doctoral-level director.
  • For the master's-degree path, at least two years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience after qualifying, including at least two years in a clinical laboratory with a doctoral-level director.
  • A New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
  • Expert knowledge of New York State Department of Health regulations.
  • Knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practice and Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of computerized systems.
  • Basic understanding of quality control procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications.
  • Skill in pipetting.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and authoritatively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to plan and organize job tasks or resources efficiently.
  • Ability to address issues and concerns as they arise and manage multiple competing tasks.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions and implement solutions to moderate problems.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with supervision and oversee day-to-day shift activities and workflow in the laboratory.
  • Lead and provide feedback to assigned staff.
  • Ensure laboratory standard operating procedures, practices, policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations are followed under current Good Manufacturing Practice conditions where appropriate.
  • Triage and perform patient testing.
  • Maintain optimal product inventory and place product orders for internal and external requests during shifts.
  • Perform platelet antibody screening and crossmatching.
  • Perform or delegate quality control on the automated hematology analyzer, currently Sysmex XE-2100D.
  • Assign work based on priority and shift conditions and review logs and recap reports daily.
  • Ensure a smooth transition from shift to shift.
  • Recommend improvements to business unit operations.
  • Work on-call as necessary.
  • Work overtime to cover shifts and holidays.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
