Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six years of network or wireless networking-related experience for Network Systems Research Engineer III, eight years for Network Systems Research Engineer IV, or nine years for Senior Network Systems Research Engineer I.
- Ability to obtain a United States passport and travel domestically and internationally.
- Ability to obtain a Secret-level United States security clearance based on a background investigation.
- Knowledge of local area networks and Layer 2 switching, including copper, fiber, Wi-Fi, virtual local area networks, and spanning tree.
- Knowledge of Internet Protocol networking and Layer 3 switching or routing, including IP subnetting and direct, static, and dynamic routing.
- Knowledge of supporting services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, Network Time Protocol, and Domain Name System.
- Skill in using word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications to produce professional-quality proposals and documentation.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work digitally using Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio, as well as Adobe and other tools.
- Willingness and ability to occasionally work outside normal office hours.
- Ability to install and remove servers, switches, radios, and antennas in racks, on walls or poles, or in other locations.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, walk, use a step stool, and climb ladders to reach radio locations.
- U.S. citizenship or legal permanent resident status is required.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate and analyze technical approaches to research opportunities.
- Research and evaluate equipment, protocols, designs, procedures, and tools to address research requirements.
- Produce network designs and other technical components of research proposal submissions.
- Establish standards and plans for new or upgraded research networks.
- Collect and evaluate input from researchers, systems administrators, contractors, and vendors to develop network specifications, requirements, and plans.
- Design activities for network research projects and recommend research network designs.
- Establish standards and processes for network engineering designs and assist with planning and mapping methods, procedures, problems, and repairs.
- Design research network security measures, configuration backups, and security methods.
- Develop work plans and project schedules, including phases, personnel, and networking requirements.
- Establish standards for new technology deployments and research network integration and interoperability testing.
- Configure, install, and test research networks.
- Test methods and plans used to certify sophisticated research networking projects against required installation design standards.
- Establish protocols and processes for problem management and support.
- Provide Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III support for network issues and assist the research team with other support issues.
- Diagnose and repair complex hardware and software problems.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of established processes and protocols.
- Establish procedures for compliance with network security regulations.
- Perform security assessments and audits to ensure compliance with government standards.
- Design and implement security measures, data backup, and protection methods.
- Develop disaster recovery plans for network equipment and systems.
- Drive to other campuses, vendor locations, and other locations for meetings and to assist with research network installation and operations.
- Support researchers by gathering data such as packet captures for research and other projects.
- Contribute to monthly or quarterly project updates and presentations for project sponsors.
- Collect technical updates and data or other artifacts needed for project reporting.
- Collaborate with the research team to define project deliverable reports.
- Assist with preparing project deliverables, reports, and presentations for project sponsors and industry symposia.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices.
- Engage in ongoing training and development to enhance technical skills and knowledge in research computing engineering.
- Provide technical leadership to student teams.
- Lead, motivate, develop, and coach Graduate Assistants and Student Technicians.
- Model ethical, regulatory, and performance standards.
- Conduct professional development training for team members.
Desired Qualifications
- IT certifications in networking, network security, Juniper, Cisco, or other routing and security categories.
- Experience with network monitoring, including Simple Network Management Protocol and logging.
- Experience with network security, including firewalls and Network Address Translation/Port Address Translation.
